today i saw this"thing" coming right at me in a wave
i was all alone at 6:15 am, surf sucked, cold tooshaak.jpg

normally i can ID it as a dolphin
i wait for it to come up for air if i cant see distinguishing dolphin features
its always a dolphin
except for today
i thought it was gonna either run me over or bite me cuz it was comin at me very fast in the wave, i braced for impact, keeping my board between me and it
now ive seen thousands of dolphins do this in person (ride a wave)
this time it was scary and i paddled in quickly after it never came up for air
i watched from the beach for a while , it never came up for air, that i saw
and it was just one creature, not a school, like i usually see
i keep thinkin "i think this time it was a shark"
it was about the size of a large dolphin, i couldnt see its face or tail fin to ID it in the few seconds
i cant say for sure it was a shark, but i think it was
then i saw my friend and told him the story
he said "its probably the same great white that chased my friend out of the water yesterday a few blocks away"
which is puttin me in the "75% chance that was a shark"
and i really want it to be a dolphin

btw that picture i found online is a dolphin, was in a wave with its school, just looked like what i saw so i used it here

heya 000,
good story!
:shark:

i shot this vid yearz ago, dig it for what it is, raw footage of somethin' that caught my eye
where i've seen a few sharks swim right here, slowly though, alwayz solitary, like this animal seen l8 one day:
it had me perplexed, a dolphin or a shark, either way, it was haulin' arse, you ain't gettin' outta it's way if it has you targeted, right? as i watched farther down, i saw a couple of dolphins, together, come up for air about 3 football fields away from where i sat, it was a dolphin, chasin' fish, it can be scary though, when seen in thee blink of your eye, "what thee f**k was that"...

Surfer Matt Erickson and a shark share the waves near the Coronado Shores. Photo taken March 1st, 2021 by Alisa Kerr.
Earlier this week, Coronado’s Alisa Kerr was enjoying the view from her Coronado Shore’s condo, when she spotted a shark swimming near a surfer. She snapped a few photos and shared them with The Coronado Times.
The surfer in the photo is Matt Erickson, who wasn’t bothered at all with his unplanned “surf buddy.” Matt commented, “I kicked out from a wave on the inside and as I was paddling back out, I saw it swim slowly right under me. I noticed it probably about the same time it noticed me. I pulled my chest up to get a better look at its size and its tail swished right under me, I could feel the water backspin under my board. We decided to surf a bit longer. Figure if it wanted to have a go at me it would have already. This wasn’t my first shark encounter while surfing but this was my first white shark encounter. It was actually a lot less scary than some of the Tigers and Bulls in American Samoa.”

Alisa shared, “I’ve never seen a shark from my balcony before and now all of a sudden I’ve seen several over the last week. The tide has been so high and the water so clear, it makes it easy to spot them. It’s an interesting thing to see!”
Last December, Coronado beaches were closed for two days when a swimmer’s fin was bitten by a shark. There has not been a shark incident since December 2020.
The City of Coronado is partnering with CSU Long Beach’s shark lab to learn more about the local shark population. This comes after an increase in the number of shark sightings this past summer.

its worth mentioning that there are MANY different species of whales that
resemble dolphins.

paddling out once I watched a HUGE (whatever) in the wave barreling towards me
and all I could do is wonder why a "dolphin" was as big as a Chevy van.

Kauai's north shore ~
speakin' of sharks,
check out this rather large Tiger:

caught "Down~Under" recently! That thing is gnarly, h8 to see it swim towards ya, no?
The Valley Isle of Maui is said to now be the most likely place to have a shark incident in the Hawaiian Island chain ~ Tiger sharks, being the most prevalent intruder with an "occasional great white" making an island visit. :shark:

Last week I had a kite lose its air pressure while at a N Maui outer reef. I tried NOT to think about that fact during the ensuing 45 minute drift back to shore.
