Green alert (whatever that means) for this weekend. Expected to run Friday or Saturday.

Women's event at Waimea may also run one of those days, although maybe not since they're also having a women's event at Jaws.

Looks like most of the forecasts have the swell around 12 to 14 feet at 20 seconds. Pretty much 15 foot with some 20 foot sets, big by any standard, but pretty much the low to mid range of what the best guys can handle out there. I suspect that they ran last years event along with this years event along the lines of "can the women handle it?" It is the only thing that makes sense because for sure once it's 25 to 30 feet on the sets the women are going to be having a hard time. I am sure they would tell you the same thing. What would be awesome is to wait for a swell that will be huge for the men the first day and then run the women the second day when it's still big but on the way down. Maybe run the women Friday and then they can have their Waimea event on Saturday. I hope they replay them cause I plan on surfing both days.

The women can charge as big as it gets Jaws... Paige Alms could take the men's event as far as I'm concerned.

blowing their wad on the first swell of the season
who knows what this winter will be like but seems like they should wait if this isn't a 25'+ swell

satellite pass last night measured 58ft seas (larger than models). as long as meat of the swell doesn't miss just NE of Hawaiian islands gotta expect it'll be a a step or more larger than nuri (2014). seems like a great swell (very long period groundswell from good-great direction) for performance big wave surfing which i think is the main goal

I think they should allow the coaches to be in the lineup with the women. Lining up at big Jaws has to be horribly hard.

BS. If they need a coach out there, they shouldn't be out there. The guys who know the place have put in the time. Same at Mavericks, Todos and other spots. They've paid their dues 10-fold and proved they belong out there because they can handle it.

One only need to look at the women's heats at Jaws the first time they let them contest it. At least half never even caught waves? Many got hurt, and pretty badly too. Maybe a handful of women on the entire planet belong out at Jaws and not even enough to have more than a single heat.

One person I'd like to see try is Steph Gilmore. I don't think she wants it though. Never seen her surf a really big wave.

BTW, it's GO for Friday and Saturday.

Buoys have not hit yet. If they hit at midnight it won't show on Maui till 10 to noon. Bet it will start around noon to two and finish on Saturday. So if you live in the islands you can sample the swell at a protected spot then watch the psychos do what they do. Add a few beers and it sounds like it will be a good day!!

Small 24 second swell was hitting the NW buoys by 4pm yesterday but didn't really start to show till 8pm . It's at 12 feet 21 seconds now (3am) which is what they were forecasting.
I think they're crazy calling the contest on so far in advance. My guess is it's going to get pretty good late today but there won't be much left Saturday morning,

20 ft set on the waimea buoy?
Waimea is 4 feet 20 seconds now. My guess is that it will by 12' to 15' by daybreak or soon after and around 20' in the afternoon. Waimea doesn't really like that long period stuff.
