De Palo & Sons in Shell Beach
Wife and I were up there a couple of weekends ago and it's a must stop.
Not just Italian sandwiches, EVERYTHING in that place is DaKine.
If any of you are headed north on a surf trip or just road tripping, it's at the end of the frontage road of Shell Beach just before heading in to Avila.
If you want straight-up Italian style sandwich get the Grandpa De Palo's Grinder
Smoked Ham, Capicola, Mortadella, Soprisatta Salami, Green Olive Tapanade, Provolone Cheese, Peproccinis, Tomatoes, Arugala and Italian Vinegarette.
One sami is enough for 2.

My old fav italian sub joints in SD have either gone downhill or closed over the years. I like POMAS and Mona Lisa but always looking for more options. This is definitely a modern hipster take on the Italian sub but the muffuletta sandwich and J & Tony's in downtown is the best I've had in years.

There's a butcher near my house that makes a bunch of killer cold cuts, but doesn't make a sandwich with them (even though they have made to order sandwiches with their other meats). It breaks my heart.

Y'all talking Italian AMERICAN sandwiches. In Italy there are two kinds of sandwiches-- panini and tramezzini. Panini are like subs. Tramezzini are like white bread. Oh wait, there is a third kind of sandwich- piadena. Those are a grilled and are pretty good.

In Italy, in my experience (lived there for over 6 years) sandwiches are very plain. They tend not to mix more than two ingredients (one meat and a cheese). The video above shows an exception to the rule.

I'm looking forward to the CNN show with Stanley Tucci...

One of the best sandwiches I've ever had was in Florence and conforms to those rules. A lampredotto from I Trippaio Fiorentino. Still fantasize about that thing sometimes.

Roma Market in Pasadena.

He says the secret to the sandwich is its simplicity.
“Everything I put in the sandwich is imported from Italy. I use the quality merchandise,” Mazzeo says. “I don’t put no mayonnaise. I use olive oil. No lettuce. No tomatoes. Nothing like that.”
After all these years, Mazzeo can still be found behind the deli counter and is Roma's most recognizable face. He comes to work every day at 4 a.m. and leaves at 9 p.m.
“In my life, I don’t take a day off,” Mazzeo says. “When I go to bed, I want to come back. Because I like people and I like what I’m doing.”

Yes of course, we're talking Italian subs as found in America. You don't find vegetables on sandwiches often, tomato and basil on a caprese but not much else.

I prefer sandwiches (and burgers) without lettuce, but I'm cool with tomato, onion, peperoncini. Pickles...eh, depends on the pickle.

Roma Market in Pasadena.
It's a good sandwich.

"Nobody in this neighborhood can swallow paste like I can."

My grandfather took me to see Barfly when I was 14, in a theatre on Broadway in NYC, where he was a musician. He was about to get a job doing music for a film with Rourke in it and he wanted to see if Rourke could act, as if he knew. Maybe he did. I'm not a Bukowski fan, but this is a good film.

Anthony Bourdain in his cookbook "Appetites" writes a bit about sandwiches, and especially why he hates Club Sandwiches.

My all-time favorite is the Godmother at Bay Cities in Santa Monica mentioned above, but don't sleep on the Godfather from Columbo's in Pacifica.

any one eat at any of the following?

New York City - Alidoro
Alidoro, Pinocchio, Mathew, Brando sandwiches

New Orleans - Central Grocery
Muffuletta sandwich

Pittsburg - Primanti
Capicola Sandwich

During the pandemic I signed up for KauKau Grill and Goldbelly food delivery after hearing Bobby Lee talk about Goldbelly on his podcast. You can get food from most famous restaurants in the US delivered right to your door. The three restaurants above are part of the Goldbelly network offering italian sandwiches.

I actually joined Goldbelly to get some Snows and Franklin's brisket without having to fly to Texas and stand in line.

any good?

The only place I remember when I was there years ago for a conference was breakfast at Mama's and a bunch of dinners at fancy places in the quarter but it was dark and I was drinking. All I remember is a homeless drunk standing outside looking in through a huge ass window at our party screaming at the top of his lung over and over gain that he was in love with a pretty young lady exec sec sitting next to me and was going to kidnap her and marry her. They had to send a bouncer to escort him away from the restaurant and into the hands of the police. I didn't know her but felt sorry when she started to cry from being totally embarrassed and scared in front of a bunch of important execs. The whole place smelled like urine outside.

The Alidoro sandwiches looks appetizing like the florence one but I bet the muffuletta is tastier.

I guess sort of like a more dense italian sammie with their olive spread, different bread, and less salad stuff (I'm not a big italian sammie guy myself). Picnic lunch kinda stuff for the family, bring to the zoo, sit along the river or sit on the square steps and watch street performance and eat lunch.
Yep, never have been to any place in the USA like it. Voodoo, weirdos, art, food, trannies, scam artist, street performers...

My favorite brekki was Cafe du Monde. Cafe au lait with that chicory stuff and orders of piping hot beignets.
