this is a hawk that was hunting over a meadow in the foothills where I was hiking with my wife and friends and the dogs on Memorial Day. We also had encounters with coyote, horned toad, a nearly two-foot long lizard, a garter snake, a beautiful dragonfly and the haunting humm of literally hundreds of thousands of bees...

Well this response really shows my age but Richie Havens was cool before he did Woodstock:

High Flyin Bird from the Album "Mixed Bag" (which I still have on vinyl).

There's a high flyin' bird, flying way up in the sky,
And I wonder if she looks down, as she goes on by?
Well, she's flying so freely in the sky.

Lord, look at me here,
I'm rooted like a tree here,
Got those sit-down,
can't cry Oh Lord, gonna die blues.

Now the sun it comes up and lights up the day,
And when he gets tired, Lord, he goes on down his way,
To the east and to the west,
He meets God every day.

Lord, look at me here,
I'm rooted like a tree here,
Got those sit-down, can't cry
Oh Lord, gonna die blues.

Now I had a woman
Lord, she lived down by the mine,
She ain't never seen the sun,
Oh Lord, never stopped crying.

Then one day my woman up and died,
Lord, she up and died now.
Oh Lord, she up and died now.
She wanted to die,
And the only way to fly is die, die, die.

There's a high flyin' bird, flying way up in the sky,
And I wonder if she looks down as she goes on by?
Well, she's flying so freely in the sky.

Lord, look at me here,
I'm rooted like a tree here,
Got those sit-down, can't cry,
Oh, Lord, gonna die blues.

These are the two youngster Kestrel fledglings.. a male and a female and they took their first flight over Memorial Day weekend.

The male is the one with the solid black band on it's tail.

Here's a little guy that hasn't flown the nest yet.
This is a baby Parrotlet, the smallest member of the Parrot family I believe.
We have nine adult Parrotlets now and have been trying to have them pair up and breed for about a year now.
We had a hen sitting on three eggs last week but through a major screw-up she's now dead and we lost all three eggs too.
This is how they look whilst fledging and this one will be weaned in a couple of weeks.
Neat little birds and three of ours talk like crazy. Mostly it seems the males are the more chatty ones but they are also more prone to bite when you reach in their cage, being very territorial.
Trying to keep the thread alive.

Keen - Most of those pricks only talked about the rule of thirds to me.
Well here's my first rule of thirds crop. The sun/haze/fog didn't cooperate that morning, but oh well...

Parrotlets are neat little birds and they don't all bite but they pack a mean one for a little bird when they do.
Thanks for the thoughts re: losing little Pip. Still cannot believe it but that's one of the things you have to deal with when you are into breeding birds, there will be screw-ups and you will lose birds. I get very attached to the little buggers and it always just tears me up when we lose one, but you get over it. This one though.......

Anyway, here's a pic of my wife with a couple of Lovebirds.
As a pet I'd prefer a Lovebird although they don't talk like a Parrotlet can.
Oh, and just so you know, she's almost 55 and could still kill a lesser man, if ya know what I mean.

Take care.
