On our walk this AM we went to San Leandro trail in Montecito.
Lots of re-built mega mansions almost finished.
This area was ground zero for the tragic 2018 mud slides.
This gate house is still in re-build mode.
To give you an idea how much mud and debris covered this entire area, the mud line just below the window is 15 feet o_O

Take care.
Fun fact: they recently changed the name Pacific Slope Flycatcher back to Western Flycatcher in 2023.

"In 2023, ornithologists lumped Pacific-slope and Cordilleran Flycatchers together as Western Flycatcher after treating them as separate species since 1989."

Big Beach
taken at a drill site we were prepping in the same underwater canyon (Mississippi Canyon, GOM) five years after the Deepwater Horizon blew up in 2010. you can see depth & heading upper right and long/lat upper left of the ROV, got some really good photos of weird blind sharks as well. i think this was the project when the Sea Shepard suboids showed up harrassing us until i told them we were doing environmental compliance for BSEE....

Vancouver Island
There has been a lot of Orca activities around Vancouver Island this year and down around Sooke in particular.

Here's a nice juicy seal sitting in very shallow water in what is called Sooke Basin..
ShallowSealLee-AnnRuttan.jpg

And here is one of the main reasons why it's sitting so shallow.
OrcaBullSookeLARuttan.jpg

He was with a couple of females, and they are all transients who like to eat seals and sea-lions and such.
And here they are.
