On a teacher workshop up in your area, we were listening to a park ranger blab about the geography of the golden gate area. I was having an ADD moment, and watched a heron stalk something on the grassy hill behind the ranger. It poked its head down and plucked a gopher out of its hole, then flew over us w/ it in its mouth. Very adequate hunting on land.

When I was a kid I picked up a caterpillar that looked a lot like that except bright green. It stung the hell out of me. Left a lasting impression.
sounds like an American dagger moth, heard they hurt like hell.

If that was in the uk it would be Arctia caja (Garden Tiger) but you may have others that are similar there.

That's a big one! I had one as a pet when I was a kid. Had a leash for it and would take it one walks.

It's a Costa Rican jumping alien bug. Harmless and non venomous but can jump halfway across the room.
Techically it is a tailess whip scorpion or Amblypygi.
