I'm trying surfing for the first time this summer/fall and would like a little advise on where & when to go.

Its has to be somewhere on the east coast (preferably florida). I would like to go somewhere, where I can get a couple lessons, then be able try it on my own without a huge crowd or local pressure, but at the same time have decent action.

I was thinking Cocoa Beach. Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Jax? Whatever's closest to you you'll fins something. You just have to be there. The farther South the better. I'm on the GC so the easiest shot to me is Jacksonville. It's dirty but it's the Atlantic.
Surf whatever, where ever. If you're in Cocoa, surf there. If you're in Daytona, give it a shot.
The only way to learn anything is by doing it. If you just started, decent action is gonna be waist high. Not that uncommon, even down here.

You're gonna have a great time! Cocoa Beach will be a good place to get wet and flop around in the water. If you head 15 minutes south on A1A you'll run into Patrick Air Force Base. There is a small parking lot on the beach side of the road (at a stop light), the only people at this parking lot are surfers. What I am trying to say is you will recognize the area because there is no beach just a small entrance and you'll wonder why all the cars are there? It's a good easy break that will give you just a little better waves than in Cocoa. You pretty much always want to be surfing Florida on low tide so just call a surf shop and ask them what time the tides are. There is a surf shop called Natural Art in Cocoa that can help you with anything you need. Try to stay out of Ron Jon's. It's more of a tourist trap. If you go another 15 to 20 minutes south you'll run into Melbourne which also has good beginning waves at Melbourne beach. Groove Tube is a surf shop there that can help you out. If you're just starting the place I would recommend you stay AWAY from is Sebastian Inlet. It breaks off a jetty and it can get really good there, but you don't want to ruin it for the people that are really good surfers and you'll just get in their way. So, no matter what people tell you, please let the locals have their wave or you could be in for some nasty looks and maybe worse. If you go during the fall/ winter you'll get a better chance of waves. During the summer it's pretty flat. You probably know this, but rent or borrow a long board. You'll be able to catch Florida waves. If you use a short board you'll probably just end up paddling around all day. Once you get better you'll be able to graduate to something smaller. Trust me, you'll have much more fun starting out. Good luck and Welcome to the greatest sport on the earth!

Okay Newbie, first things first. If you TRY surfing, you will fail, maybe do it a few times, then quit. Period. Surfing has just about the hardest learning curve of any sport. People that are excellent at skiing (water/snow), skateboarding, snowboarding, windsurfing, hand gliding, water polo.. whatever, are always blown away at how hard surfing is.. Sure you can get a 4" thick log and stand up in a short amout of time, but to get proficient at turning, carving, smacking the lip, etc, takes years. So here's the deal: Either Surf or don't bother trying. When I say Surf, you have to make up your mind right from the start that you will become a surfer NO MATTER WHAT and you WILL keep at it forever. If you're not willing to do that, go TRY badminton. I'm not trying to be a AHole about this, quite the contrary, just preparing you for the long haul. Surfing is unlike anything else out there. I went to college at FIT in Melbourne and I can't tell you how many guys came down to FLA and TRIED surfing, only to end up walking around as poseurs with a $400 board in their dorm room that never got wet again. Go for it. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/applause.gif" alt="" />
