I had my first session on my Surf Prescriptions Single fin, it was about waist to chest high and slightly mushy beach break, but a lot of good sections. It may be too soon to give a review of the board but here's what I noticed.

At first riding the board almost felt too squirrely (I had been riding my green board which probably outweighs it by 5 to 10 lbs, and is about 1" wider, 0.5" thicker with much less rocker and a wide, beaked nose) but I was able to adjust to it after a few waves. I could tell the SP was glassed much lighter, not only by the well-formed pressure dents in the deck, but by the fact that I could throw the board around with little effort, the thing really came alive in good sections. It also felt like it paddled easier than my green board, even though the green machine has a bit more volume. I guess "Doc" put the foam in all the right places.

The board seems to hold well, even in steep sections where I thought it might spin out. I'm sure part of that is because the tail is fairly narrow, but I'm wondering how it would handle with the 8" norm flex.

I'd have to say that the board was a fairly easy transition to make, I think it handles more like a modern thruster than some old school stick, so I think it's a board that a person whom primarily rode thrustered shortboards, could get used to.

Honestly I didn't really notice how well the board handled until I hopped back on my green board yesterday. It took me quite a few waves to get used to it again so I think that says something about the SP. It seriously felt like going from a shortboard to a longboard.

I'd still really like to try out one of the CI single fins too...I wonder if Pinliner is thinking about selling?

The films I've seen of Donovan Frankenreiter riding one would support your observations.

Ive got a couple early 70s diamond tails,
7'6 and 7'9 that bottom turn and ride down the
line like no tomorrow.
Ones a Jacobs-Weideman and the other is an Infinity.
(gotta get a camera and get some pics out for sure)

Every once in a while I will dust em off and go for a spin. Kinda feel that its not right to just let a board sit---must get em wet every once in a while.
I get snickers from other surfers, when I'm walking to the surf, but hey...theres no denying
those old dinosaurs work well when the waves are up. I get down the line so much faster and steadier than the potatoe modern chip thruuster I have.

I'm thinking of gettin a few more, just cause I
love the feel of em.

sounds like fun! i took out the murphy yesterday nite... didnt end up gettin out till like 630, stayed out till last light, up in del mar. some pretty decent chest-head high waves, decent form, but kinda mushy with the too-high tide. got more good lefts in that session than i ever have. towards the end of the session i started to really get back on that pad, and crank the bottom turns. i was almost suprised how well i could turn the thing.

im thinking about putting in an 8" fin i have into it, and moving it all the way up in the box.. see if i can get a little more stability up on the nose.

Super fun to work the fins as well. I'm alway
hammering the fins foreward and back (with fist)
on those old dogs, as each swell produces different juice.
Big walls--all the way back
Big peaks-slam those fins foreward and crank a
rad bottom turn, float off the top..
yada yada

It such a blast trying out different styles, equip---makes such a difference. Each era produced such fine boards---just gotta sniff em out

*nstink, stoked for you on that board. If that had been just a little bigger I might have jumped in with a bid on it too. Glad it went to someone who appreciates it.

I was down at Moonlight this afternoon, and TFAD & Pinliner were nice enough to show me a round a bit. One of the larger rooms had about 6 board stands in it, and on each stand was a CI single fin. All with beautiful coloring and those fantastic Moonlight glass jobs in progress. It was enough to make a single-fin lover cry.

My first ever new board was a 6'1" channel-bottom single by Robert August, circa 1980. I've been curious ever since to try another. Hopefully it'll happen fairly soon.

Waldo, sorry I missed you today, left moonbase just before you got there. Wanted to show you this board (Same as the one mentioned in the thread above) Developed it with moss from a nat young that was shaped at moonlight in 1979, the year they opened. This is an unreal board and is best when glassed light and used with a 8.5 in. TK flex fin.

Better luck next time, eh JJR.
I surf down your way once or twice a month, sometimes more, and I told TFAD & Pinliner that I'd enjoy connecting for a session soon. So maybe we can all hook up. Get a few more BBers and we can take over Swamis for a day

I had been working with Dennis on refining that shape for about 4 or 5 years, he says it is very similar to the Red Barron model he shapes for Iron Cross. The board I had before that one just had a 1/2" narrower tail on it. I ended up buckling it at a really hollow LJ reef but I got some of the best waves of my life there. With your feet in the right spot, that board will hold amazingly well for a long board, and if you can get used to noseriding a light weight board, you'll get some long ones.
