Here's what I want: paddles and catches waves well, fun to surf in small mushy beachbreak but can also perform in bigger better surf, and must fit inside my car (Subaru Forester) which rules out a longboard. It's basically got to be sub-7 feet (mid 6 foot range would be optimum) and not a quad fish or shortboard (I have or will have these). My usual shortboard is a 6'4" thruster or quad. What should I be looking at?

My griffin kyles 5 fin works great, and fits your criteria.

But it's a shortboard technically.

I dunno, maybe a Walden Mini Disc type board? Or that Oak Foils thing that stubster posted awhile back but shorter?

If the only reason you don't want a longboard is that it won't fit in your car, I think you needn't worry. My wife had an outback, which is basically the same thing as your forester only not as tall, and 9' longboards fit in there no problem.

If you're into hulls, try Moss or Fineline or Zamora. All amazing. Hell, add Ambrose to that mix and you could have anything you want. Just call them all and talk about it. Pick the best option for you.

How did she fit the longboard in her Subaru? On a rail and between the front seats? I've got a manual so I'm trying to avoid having the nose of the board at my shoulder.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. The 5 fin options I'm going to rule out, they're too shortboard-ish but do look fun. Bonzer5fin, what is a hull and is it anything like an egg?

Hulls are single fin displacement bottoms that haul ass and carve like crazy. Usually best for a long wall, I have seen them ridden at RJ's by wj, who kills it on his. Look at Kasers daily bread for todays post. He shows a parabolic hull by Fineline. Pretty damn fun boards.

The Kiddler! I can't rave enough about this board! It's only 6'8" (it can be made smaller or bigger) , but it paddles into gutless waves effortlessly (much easier than a fish). One or two paddles and you're on better waves. The board has tons of drive through flat sections. You can do close-stance cheater 5s all day long. On better waves, you can pump it down the sections and make tight bottom turns and whack it off the top. Beware, if you purchase one of these, you may never ride any of your other boards again. It makes surfing so effortless. This one board can pretty much replace my entire quiver.

On the right side, upside down, nose on dash board, tail on rear deck. Gotta recline the frontseat to match and remove rear headrests if you want it to sit flatter. I can fit the same 9'0" in my wife's current vw golf now, which is even shorter.

The hull and Kiddler look nice; but if I can fit a longboard in my car that would be an option too. Not sure which way to go! Thanks for all the input.
how about an egg
or even a quad egg fish (sounds like breakfast but needs some salsa )http://surfysurfy.blogspot.com/2008/05/roundnose-moonfish.html

I'm kind of leaning towards a mid 6 foot egg at this point; I did a bb search on hulls and they seem a little too specific, but eggs seem like they may be what I'm looking for. I'm thinking single fin egg...lots of foam...low rocker...that just might do it for me!

See the "Bring on Summer..." thread posted on here. I
drive a Mitsubishi Outlander wagon, similar in size to your
ride, and can fit a log that size inside with the nose
on the dash and the front seat reclined with no problem.
I'd imagine it would work the same for you...

Doesn't the Forester come with racks on the roof?

Yes, but when I surf I go before or after work, and I've got to leave the board and car in a sketchy parking lot in the Valley in the meantime. The board would get stolen, tagged or vandalized if I left it on the rack. I think I'll get a longboard at some point but it will be for weekends and camping trips. I'd probably kill someone if I took a longboard out in good waves anyway!
