Perhaps this thread could naturally transition to “My attempt to retire in Mecca”.

@Truth seems oddly hesitant to disclose the quiet paradise he enjoys without the masses…

@santacruzin, you mentioned you have a plan?

I have a few pesky life details that are keeping me from just up and moving (wife, house, dog, money). But a potential return to Valhalla could happen in late 25, or perhaps 26.

The next rounds will be reconnaissance missions, hoping to see more of the country and discover areas I like and dislike, with the eventual goal of being there for a good chunk of the year (realistically 10+ years out).

Anyone else done this? Like a cash reward for info leading to an arrest, I will surely remember anyone who contributes to my new life as a proud Indonesian.

Yeah my plan is to get my life obligations squared away, and then we will be in Indonesia in season and then the 805 for winter.

I have a local friend with plenty of land and was able to make a deal.
Have houses in the nard and Europe that we will rent and investments to live off.

Indo is funny, lots of stories about Bules losing their money.

Truth is out there and has been for years doing it, he’s the one to talk to. I am still trying to make my sh!t happen and def not the smartest guy.

probably organizing some trips in 2026 though…..

guess my main objective of being here is to get tubed in trunks, afternoon naps and drink beer. I want no responsibilities. I have flirted many times in Nias with buying land and building. But have never had the guts to pull the trigger (thank God)- very few bules have success stories when purchasing places in remote indonesian locations- total headache and you need to be there full time to make sure you are not getting screwed one way or another. It is so affordable to just rent here - i am in indo and Ii want to have freedom - not a house and what that entails to keep it up and running.

My whole take on leaving home to go anywhere foreign - is just do it - if you overthink life, finances, relationships it will never happen. Come for a year, learn all the nuances of living here and I guarantee you with the waves you will get and the lifestyle you have, you will never go back and you will realize how radical it is to live in America - prices, crime, homeless, angry people.

Luckily, I landed an insane teaching job with ex pat salary and package 5 minutes from yo yos, 15 mins from super sucks and 45 from scar reef. Plan is to work 4-6 more years, save a boatload of cash then start collecting my california teachers pension. Cushy job in great location and yo yos goes off during the offseason - best place to be Oct - March

Don’t over think it - just do it -

Enjoy! I only surfed kandui once, but I found it to be a pretty quick/critical wave (my backhand). Take that for what it’s worth re boards.

It also gets shallow quick on the inside. Still have the “Mentawai tattoos” on my shoulder from there! A guy in our boat needed stitches on his dome and got to visit the quite attractive Norwegian doctor who was posted there.

Of course tonnes of waves on the other side and nearby.

Jelly…
