It's almost 70 years old and a bunch of white people who don't live in Detroit/Chicago/Gary/Dayton and spend two months a year in that part of Michigan don't want their beaches looking like Price William Sound. Ditto the year-round residents who have seen what "throw all the sh!t in the lake" does and love their zone.
It's really weird. I have run into some NW Michigan crew on surf trips and they don't come across as partisan at all, they are rabidly pro-gun, not woke or anti-woke one way or the other etc. but they're really, really vehement about oil pipelines in the Lakes for whatever reason, and this one has been Enemy #1 for a while.
