Just booked some tix on Alaska, great prices all considering being able to use miles, companion fares, etc. $25 board fees are super cheap, too. Looking at an AIrbnb in Makawao. Any thoughts on the area? We like the off the beat places and don't mind driving around for waves and all that. Gonna rent a van and drive out to Hana, maybe sneak a session in at Honolua, that type of stuff. Recommendations appreciated

Thanks, Belch

This doesn't answer your question but...

What are the board restrictions on Alaska? Will they let you bring 3-4 boards as long as the weight is less than 50lbs?

I paid $75 each way from San Diego to Kodiak and SD to Oahu. 2 boards.

Makawao is probably the coolest town on maui imo. has some tourist shops but still has upcountry paniolo flavor. restaraunts, general store has good reebs, and plenty restaraunts to choose from
cooler temps, 1500'-2k elevation

killer mtb riding too just above town, you can rent a bike at the shop next to pharmacy, ask for moose! :)

you WILL be driving a lot if you want to surf the better waves.

We're thinking of renting a camper van and doing some camping in Hana, any tips on places to rent a VW van? Our friends in Haiku have a van and we wanna go camp with them

Thx
