monopoly by 2 big fin companies. my usa made cnc cut fins for futures blow all the overseas ones out of the water. also, nice thing about glasssons is that u can still get usa made high quality fins.
Monopoly indeed. But Futures are made in CA I believe. Plenty of other outfits too.

Making your own seems about as real as it gets. That's awesome.

It’s a cultural thing. Take Slater for instance, who is firmly at pinnacle surf status… and a major FireWire shareholder.

@ReForest Why do you insist on putting in things like "sounds incredibly foolish" and "sounds silly to me" ?

You have just called some people fools and silly. How should they respond? I can understand why you aren't a lawyer. If you get a JD you might learn it isn't necessary to put down your opponent to win an argument. You're not going to win by the way. You just equated surfing to tennis.

This pretty much applies to all the shapers on Firewire or Slater Designs.
Machado had to earn his chops in a shaping bay before Firewire came knocking.
So did TOMO, Dan Mann, Webber, Akila Aip, and everyone on their line up.
Tomo pretty much did all his R&D on his own.

And not all surfboard makers, glassers, sanders, etc. are surfers. Some dont surf at all. There are a quiet a few guys at XTR that don't surf at all. But they do good work on a board, that many guys on here enjoy and swear by!

I just dont understand the argument that in order to make a good product you have to use the product; and if you make the product and dont use the product, you're taking away from someone else that could be making and using the product, so you should just step away from it altogether. That just doesn't make any sense and sounds incredibly foolish!

Do you have to drive a car in order to work at a car manufacturer?
Do you have to play baseball in order to make good baseballs?
Do you have to wear hats in order to make a good hat?
Do you have to play tennis in order to make a good tennis racket?

It all just sounds silly to me.

Duu if you’re gonna quote post me try and read what I posted. Everything was from the POV of why I make supporting my local shapers a priority.

If you want to make it personal sorry to say you’re an easy target. But I rather quit posting here than start beefs.

Personally I think it’s incredibly silly for me to buy an overseas made boar even though a surfer owns the company. I know almost everyone involved in my boars build. From material suppliers, cnc operator, shaper, glasser to the finish sander. They all do top rate craftsmanship.

On an economic level most of the money spend stays here in my community. Win win.

PS.

@ReForest duu I just know you from here. There’s absolutely nothing you can post about any of your boars that would convince me to buy one. There’s a handful of SD/FW guys that I’ve known for decades that wouldn’t change my mind about supporting a local shaper over an imported boar.

Heck I know a FW exec that offered me deals on boars and I told him thanks but no thanks. And to his credit he gets it.

I’ve never considered buying a custom t-shirt. Are they worth it instead of the off the rack ?
I was simply trying to suggest that the basis for moralizing is dubious at best.

The industry I work in, like so many others, has been undermined by offshoring. I’ve even directly competed with offshore creatives within the same company. Crowdsourcing has further degraded the industry and I’ve lost work to that. Now AI is encroaching.

It’s the nature of capitalism and we’re all neck deep in it.
