Sorry all, in my buzzing around to finish the launch of the new digital PDF updates for the Surfer Travel Reports, before my trip, I didn't jump on-line to let you guys know that I was leaving for a few weeks.

I'm back now and with stories, photos and memories of epic waves in the middle of the Indian Ocean. With the Roaring 40's blowing up this season, the whole Indian Ocean has been on fire for the whole summer. This included the normally smaller Maldive Atolls, boosting up the normal waist to chest high wave size to not one day under head-high for the last few months.

I stayed on Lohifushi, just missing the 150 surfers on the Island the week before (the only bad part of the resort, no restrictions on amounts of surfers). Each day between 4 and 18 surfers scattered the line-ups of the six reefbreaks (three rights and three lefts). The wind stayed offshore all day for seven days straight, then went side/onshore for three while a cyclone moved into the area between Sumatra and us.

I couldn't believe the Indo-like barrels and almost power at some of the breaks, with easy set up for barrels lasting 1 to 5 seconds.

I was warned that the Maldives can give some traveling surfers a week or two of flat conditions, but my experiences were exactly opposite. I give this destination two thumbs up if you can get a little luck not to have too many surfers in the resorts and on the charter boats and pick a time when the swell is as solid as possible to get though the shallow waters of the string of atolls.

I'll post some photos when I get them digitized.

I got epic surf in the Maldives. Was small first 2 days. Then 12 days of overhead perfection. Last day was, according to the locals, as big as it gets. Looked like Indo. That may have been the best surf trip I've ever been on. Well worth the money.
