Who has been? I am looking to book a trip over in that area for my 50th. Macaronis looks like a pretty good place to land camp with several waves near by. I know there are a lot of you who have traveled this region or surrounding areas that can share some great advice here! I would consider a boat as well but I am more than likely planning a solo trip so that is not totally an ideal situation compared to a land camp.

Advice is appreciated!

Macaronis Resort is great. I went solo a few years back and would def recommend. That said, if variety of waves is important, I think the Kandui area is probably better. At Macaronis it's pretty much going to be Maccas or Greenbush. Greenbush was too much for me - swell was pumping the entirety of my stay, so I pretty much just surfed Maccas.

Macaronis is an amazing, amazing wave, so that was no issue to me. Staying at the resort was cool because you had access to the wave all day, every day. Keep an eye on when the guys on the boats go back on board for meals and hit it. I scored great waves (though maybe not on the most ideal tides) with only 4-5 guys out every day. It's a really orderly, well behaved line-up when it gets more crowded too.

Havent been but the special's they're running are tempting, especially considering Indo is the only place so far that has a plan and date to re-open to foreigners.
Bali said September but they don't have approval from the central government

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Menkomarves) Luhut Binsar Panjaitan said Indonesia would not open the tourism sector to foreign tourists until the end of 2020.

Good luck getting anywhere in Indo unless you're on your own boat. Our friends who run Awera and Aloita are saying that the only people they are seeing are those who have sailed there. Must be nice.

Magical times for those that can be there and sustain, can't quite even imagine that! Looks like I will be lucky if Indo opens up even next year.

@Truth do you work there or something like that? What circumstances have allowed you to be there for so long, you must have a good story!

There's no question, Macaraonis Resort is awesome. A well managed resort and an incredible left on your door step. But the focus is 95% on that wave rather than the regions other waves. That said, Green Bush (a heavy left) you'll have the chance to surf once or twice if you're lucky. Its swell direction sensitive and needs a high tide to break. But Maca's is genuinely the best left in the region for 95% of visiting surfers. Everyone loves it. Works on all swells and tides. Super consistent too.

On the flip side, Kandui Resort is in a completely different surf region to Macas. Its located in the Northern Ments (aka Playgrounds). You wont surf Macas but there are 20+ waves you will have access to. Lots of variety. Its off the chart! No place like it. And if the gods are shining down on you, there's a chance you'd score "Rifles".

I wouldn't necessarily say Kandui Villas is worth the extra money. It's the most luxurious resort in the area - but its by far the most expensive resort too. On the same island is Kandui Resort which is more affordable and has direct access to 3 waves - Four Bobs (fun right), Karambat Left & A-frames (left and right). You're also the closest camp to Rifles & you're a 5 minute boat ride from Kandui Left (Nokandui). Its owned & operated by a nice American called Ray Wilcoxen.

If you have the time, check out this article which has a complete list of all the surf camps and resorts in that part of the Ments: https://www.surfcampsumatra.com/blog/mentawai-surf-camps-northern-region-playgrounds

Try and head out there before Australia's borders open! :) And as a single surfer, don't do a boat trip. Good luck!

Probably dropping in on you, California
bump.

Went ahead and put a deposit down for June next year at Macaronis.

As a regular footer - hows the right across the channel or the other couple rights nearby?

Also - do you need to boat to macaronis from the camp each time you want to surf or is it paddle-able?

Any other tips and tricks appreciated. Not my first time in Indo although first time in the Ments.

KFCs looked fun when I was there but Macaronis was perfect so we didnt surf it hahaha.
Resort has boats but if you wants rights I would stay somewhere else.

The resort is a boat ride away from maccas, def not paddleable. Someone who has stayed there probably has better info than me regarding the camps boats.
