It's stupid to compare West Coast lifeguards to lifeguards in East Coast towns, who work only in the summers, when the ocean is like a lake 98% of the time.
I believe that I did note in my post that there is a difference between the East and West coast. ;)

Those are absurd salaries for that job. But it is California, so absurd spending is to be expected.

here's a fool proof formula.

1-) obtain a plot of land. Borrow, beg, work, steal whatever... get that plot.

2-) use said lot, once paid off, as collateral for a builders loan, build.

3-) rent said building, mortgage it to max value after 3-4 months rent comes through.

4-) use said equity loan to obtain another lot, or two.

5-) repeat as necessary.

Time will make you big bucks.

Must stay loyal to the objectives and not waste on unnecessary expenses.

West of the Atlantic. East of the ICW.
I can see now that I could have chosen a more lucrative career path.
I remember when this was not much more than a minimum wage temp job, at least on the East Coast

Big money for beach bums
Similar things have gone on around here. When one town made a couple of way over the hill out of shape guards test like every other guard has to do and then let them go when they failed to qualify, they sued.......and won. Its age discrimination to make 60 something year old men have to prove they can swim and run good enough to be a lifeguard.

i got a buddy who made a career out of ocean rescue in a famous EC casino town.....he had crazy benefits for most of his career, the most absurd being that he was allowed to bank his sick days and get paid off for them at retirement. for a while there, he had 300 sick days banked, for which he would get paid at his current rate of pay (would have been a six figure payout, on top of his pension). then the town in question started to go broke, and all that got negotiated down to a fraction of the original amount.

but he still has an awesome pension, unheard of in the private sector....i tell him he should still be thrilled: his $45k annual pension is the equivalent of having $1 million banked with an annual 4.5% interest/drawdown.
he sucks at math so he still doesn't get that :foreheadslap:

Where is that?
Florida. I know beach lifeguards here; they work for their particular county, but are most certainly not unionized.

Nor is any other industry that I know of; the only unions I am aware of are the teachers union, and I' m not sure if they are unionized or just want to be.

This is probably not entirely correct. Machinists and iron workers are unionized, and there are local unions say, for bus drivers, etc. But they represent a very small part of the work force. Teachers are the largest union.
