When I can't surf I run (but I realize that's probably not good for OP).

Hiking has been my salvation while sidelined from the surf. Yesterday-

After hike checked the surf. I wasn't missing much but it was uncrowded...

i got a cortisone shot about 10 days ago. It was a little bit tender after I got the shot, but nothing crazy. My range of motion still hasn't really improved. The X-rays showed no issues. No fractures no nothing. But apparently that's not uncommon. It could be an issue with the ligaments, or a tear, or little tiny cracks in the bone that aren't visible in an X-ray.

Going to see an ankle specialist next week. Might need to get a CAT scan or MRI. We'll see. I'm really hoping I don't have to get surgery.

Also, I bought that brace. I'll let you know if it allows me to surf. Thanks for the tips everyone. I wasn't really expecting any advice, this thread was mostly lamenting the fact that I cannot surf. But I'm grateful that some of you offered some help. Thanks again.

You're doing all the right things - ruling out the major issues will let you know if you're just dealing with tendonitis/arthritis or something more major. Hope that brace works out for you, I think it should help both physically and with some piece of mind. Surgery is obviously not desirable, and depending on your health insurance potentially expensive (I'm "young and healthy" with a high deductible plan, except I had a run where I hit my deductible 3 out of 5 years during a bad stretch). The good news is that arthroscopic surgery is a really quick recover. I had a joint clean out in my "good" (less bad?) ankle and felt great within a few weeks; much quicker and far less swelling than traditional open surgery.

Obviously surgery is the last resort, hopefully you'll be back in water asap and on the mend. Good luck!

Thanks for the tips!

I actually just got done surfing earlier today with the brace. I was surfing pretty conservatively and only surfed for about an hour, but I think it worked. No ankle pain to speak of. So I think as long as I take it easy I can surf with the brace on. Thank you for that recommendation, Snowtires. I think it will at least get me in the water occassionally. Like I said, I'm really being careful not to push it, but it's ten times better than not surfing at all. You're a life saver!

I'm starting to get regular aches and pains in my back.

Used to enjoy riding tiny boards. Have a 5'7 Fling and I'm 6'2 and 220. Back will have spasms if I surf that multiple days in a row. Getting old is fun. But, It beats the alternative.

Biggest long term injury is to my ego as I age in to inevitable kookdom
I say, listen to Marcelus Wallace, "Phook Ego"!

Embrace full kookdom, and when the little ones laugh at you, just look at them and smile, and know they love and respect you deep inside for still going into old age, they're just to embarrassed to admit this in front of their peer pressure kook friends!

In the end, we ALL have an inner kook.

The older you get, the funner it gets to surf with THAT GUY and leave CRUSTY OLD AGGRO LOCAL at home stewing and brewing.
