Funny as he is I have to say im not a fan of how localism has been talked about last few years. Either its the small dick syndrom jokes or a picture of kala alexander kicking some haoles ass cause he looked at his wave.

Wish surf media would talk a bit more about what it really is.

They love to do the bullies suck approach, but why doesnt stab, for example, make an article/video explaining how it works on places as Makaha or Kauai? where surf culture exists for what it is and not as another way to sell boardshorts

Just moved somewhere thats known for its localism and been getting nothing but friendliness back from my approach. A lot of the other foreigners that I see mostly do not, since they love to come with the 'OceAn BeLonGs tO evEryOne' attitude.

Does it matter anymore in the US? Everyone got lawyers and sheriffs on speed dial these days.

While a agree with everything you said, I think it's good to point out that bully based "You can't have this cause it's MINE" localism is stupid and self defeating.

IMO, the best scenario is majority based enforcement of existing, time tested, rules.
As in "hey, it was not your turn. Be patient and wait for your own wave", or "I'm going on this one since you just paddled around me"

I wonder how the surf schools that operate in my town would go over on Kauai? Last month I took my son for a dawn patrol at a spot in Puerto Rico that used to be pretty localized and still is to some extent. Depending on which locals are out you have to sit wide and get scraps. Couldn't believe my eyes when a surf school did a beach lesson and then escorted a bunch of tourists on foamies into the lineup. I knew it was all downhill when Surfline put a cam on that break years ago.

They operate on a daily basis here in Hanalei .... at smaller beach breaks and the Instructors, are local kids who grew up here, know the rules of the road and would get called out immediately for bringing a surf lesson of 4 to 8 people into the surf line up. They grew up here and know better than to do so. Rules of the road in surfing 101, on Kaua'i.
Surf Cams on Kauai are from a distance, not like the surf cams on Oahu like Pipeline ~
though on bigger days here, one would know if the surf was going off from the cams.

The Inertia is the worst for this. Promoting the entitled victim mentality in surfing . . .

This is the way that things should be.

Don’t be a dick.

I won’t be a dick to you so don’t be one to me.

If youre being a dick I’ll let you know. Don’t care if it’s “your” spot or “my” spot.

Now what is considered being a dick is situational of course. If I paddle straight to the peak at “your” spot I’m a dick. If I do that at “my” spot then not so much.

These fucking “ocean is for everyone“ kooks are not only wrong (the ocean is NOT for everyone) but they are usually the most greed/dangerous/stupid/dickish people in the water.

Guy fucking fade drops on my wife at “my” spot, she says something to him and he says, “ocean is for everyone“.

Do it again and everyone gets choked out.

Yeah, cause saying 'bullies are baaaad' sells more boardshorts. Its not good for the business to tell people they cant just paddle out and get every wave they want straight away. So they flip it all over and turn localism into what these kooks think it is.

Don’t be a dick.

This, or vanlife hipsters posting spots cause 'surfing is about sharing', bullshit, you just want all of your friends to say how cool you are for finding a hidden spot. Reassurance, ego...

Or how many sups have i seen around home catching everything and its their first time there, you say something- you getting the 'hes so bad vibes broOoOo' stamp.

Heck, ive even had other local guys giving me the 'hes so bad vibes' stamp for doing what they should be doing. Sorry if im not okay with this everyone snakes one another orgy. Just spent the last couple decades earning my spot here

in my opinion - localism in a nutshell

- mainlanders started traveling en masse to Hawaii
- mainlanders kind of become a plague
- Hawaiians, who have a different concept of property / public / private usage decided to say: ' mainlanders - you're visitors - be more cool
- People from california decided to imitate Hawaiians, in their own towns and against other californianias
- California surf scene explodes
- California surfers become funny tribal groups - like a cartoon of Hawaii
- California is dumb
- East Coast surfers travel to california and hawaii
- East coast surfers imitate the same stuff but to a lesser extent due to local conditions (including surf break consistency)
- now everyone imitates this behavior

This could be an over simplification and ignores much of the world - but this is what i've seen as a United States, Mainland based surfer

I've been dropped in on twice in the last few months and both individuals acted like I was the bad guy for getting pissed off at them. Lol. Sadly, I don't think there's really a way to correct it since no one is going to be punching or regulating where I live.

maybe you can say - 'i'll punch you a bunch of times or you can venmo @Muscles $50' - might as well make money rather than risk jail

This will be the new 'take it to the beach' -
