Feels like you're emotionally invested in how a surf brand spends its sponsorship money. Seems weird to me.How so? I can see maybe a little erratic and overly enthused, but you're gonna have to shed some light on weird and creepy...
Sure. San Clemente is aspirational for FullertonI will buy 2% merch
Emotionally invested - yes. Hookup invested - no.Feels like you're emotionally invested in how a surf brand spends its sponsorship money. Seems weird to me.
Unless you were getting wetsuit hookups from KA, then I understand. Is that what was happening?
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Sure. San Clemente is aspirational for Fullerton
I was this invested as a grom in who rode for which surf brands. As a grown adult man, is your affinity for a brand really that dependent on 1-2 of their sponsored surfers? I guess this answers the question why brands still sponsor surfers.Emotionally invested - yes. Hookup invested - no.
I think it's just disappointing when a brand you like starts to change into a brand you don't really like. Oh well. C'est la vie...
It’s always funny to me that these brand people start a company as core, build up their base, sell name and likeness to the mega corps and then start a new core brand, rinse and repeat.I was this invested as a grom in who rode for which surf brands. What if these surfers had jumped ship to another brand? Would your allegiance stay with O’Neill or would you buy all new gear from their new sponsor?? Let’s see the new Buell suit after you burn the Oneill! LOL
Yep! I have a lot of respect for CI because they seemed to follow this pattern, but then changed course just in a nick of time. It’s always funny to me that these brand people start a company as core, build up their base, sell name and likeness to the mega corps and then start a new core brand, rinse and repeat.
the only thing that has changed is the amount of time it takes to go from core to corporate sell out.
Definitely. Reportedly the JJF Florence brand has already turned down offers to be bought. Presumably holding out for bigger $$$ down the line. But I never hear anything about Bob Hurley’s other brand that he started post-Hurley… I think it’s called IPD? Maybe you see it in OC?It’s always funny to me that these brand people start a company as core, build up their base, sell name and likeness to the mega corps and then start a new core brand, rinse and repeat.

Slater just made a post that said (i'll paraphrase) when he does a turn he thinks about all the surfers he looked up to that influenced him, that he tried to mimic.I was this invested as a grom in who rode for which surf brands. Yup you described 10-14 yr old Oeste with surf posters on his bedroom wall.Slater just made a post that said (i'll paraphrase) when he does a turn he thinks about all the surfers he looked up to that influenced him, that he tried to mimic.
I'm sort of the same way. When I'm riding a board that I saw Timmy or someone rip on, or a cool looking wetsuit or whatever, (from an add or something ) you want it so you can look like that. You kind of get into that persona when you have it, and want to surf the way you saw them in your mind. I don't think that goes away as you get older. I think that is what sells surf stuff. That image you see, that you want for yourself.
Very true.Yup you described 10-14 yr old Oeste with surf posters on his bedroom wall.
I guess I won’t speak for anyone else, but that’s certainly no longer the case for me. Like sdsrfr said, the brands come/go, get acquired, merge. Haven’t had an O’Neill suit in 20 years so could care less about their team. Why would anyone buy from Quik/Bong/RVCA/Volcom at this point, knowing that they are owned by non-surf corporations or private equity firms? Nothing core about that.
You think you surf better because you wear your fav pro's wetsuit brand? Wut?Slater just made a post that said (i'll paraphrase) when he does a turn he thinks about all the surfers he looked up to that influenced him, that he tried to mimic.

I hate it when people use that verse as if we are supposed to give up hobbies of our youth because of it."When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me." - 1 Corinthians 13:11
or
"Back in the day when I was young, I'm not a kid anymore.
But somedays I sit and wish I was a kid again" - Ahmad "Back in the Day"
