These kids who want to surf full-time need to pay more attention to how the immigrant Brazzos stay afloat here: odd jobs, shaping, fixing/reselling ebikes, etc. All that stuff gets old by the time you're 30.
Yep, a part time QS Brazzo is coaching a few kids in my zone and I know he does a quite a few random things to make ends meet.

The contracts being offered today to most sarfers are a fraction of what they were even five years ago. I'm sure Koa is happy to get whatever Darc Sport offered, which I'm assuming is < $30k annually with probably a percentage deal for an upcoming "signature" line. Quicksilver offered Leo something like $20k a year to stay on the team. I doubt Koa was even offered anything.

Clay Marzo's negotiations with RVCA for a two year deal at $50k per took several months. Asher was only getting about the same annually. Tenōre only had to better the RVCA deals by a few grand to bring a lot of the team over.

Tough times to be an aspiring pro. I see homeschooled kids getting coached and you just have to wonder how far in the sand their parents heads are. My daughter's 16 year old boyfriend is one of the top two juniors in the South Bay and he's meeting with Outerknown this week to up his current flow deal. He's asking for some help with coaching and travel. Curious to see how it goes.
Kushner at number 1 by a mile leaves Johnny at number 2 and Dylan at best number 3 and lucky to even have a sticker. Theres almost zero real talent in the South Bay in the current generation.

I didn't factor Kai into the equation. He's homeschooled, always traveling and has been hyped since he was in single digits. He rips obviously. Johnny has had more opportunities than Dylan due to finances. Dylan has only been sarfing for about 4 and a half years and is getting better quickly. Johnny and Dylan just did a little project with Annie a couple of weeks ago down south. I watched Dylan progress years before he and my daughter started hanging out, so I'm obviously biased.

I agree the level of South Bay sarfing is generally pretty poor nowadays.

I didn’t mean to knock the kid but he’s lucky to have a spon like OK. And yes, Kai‘s dad (who kills it as well) has had him on the program since the push in days. He’s an exceptional talent.

it really does trip me out how the South Bay has changed, presumably because you’ve gotta be loaded to live there now. Dating back to the earliest days of CA surfing the area has produced legendary surfers/watermen. Today the cupboard is about as bare as it can get, despite the hordes of people who call Porto etc their local.

Seems like the run ended with the Jimmy Miller/Alex Gray/Greg Browning eras.

Kids gotta be bummed today with the gravy train being over. The previous era of Kolohe, Droid, and (insert your fav Aussies here), were paid handsomely, along with getting jetted around the world for comps and boat trips.

I saw that erBB favorite, Joel "grumpy" Tudor signed with Birdwell - although he was empathic to let us know that he still had a Vans contract.

Stab's "How surfers get paid" needs an episode on Knost and that whole sub-genre of wave sliders. Only because I can use more useless information stuck in my thick brain.

There’s still goods out there, but for far fewer

The old train is over but hopefully that has hit the bottom and can only go up and get better.
Yeah, teens dress like skater again these days (at least where I live).

These things come full circle, eventually surf brands will be cool among the general populace again

So weird to see 90's/2000's skate style coming back. If the bro-hoe platform sandals come back my wife is gonna lose it (she hated types of chicks). hahaha.
