You should have a specialist check out your knee at your earliest convenience. If you’re employed, your H.R.folks should be able to direct you to the right person (a workers comp claim will handle all the expenses). If you’re self employed, get a recommendation for a specialist from your G.P. or someone you know who may have a lead to a good doctor. In San Diego, there are a number of specialists I could suggest but that isn’t going to help if you’re from out of the area...

...and there go up my workmans comp rates....

Assuming you are employed by a company and not self employed, then yes you would want to talk to your HR dept about your injury to get your claim started, they will tell you what care their comp works with in your area. If you just straight up go to the ER you could be liabel for a crazy bill without a claim. Typically your GP would have to refer you to a knee specialist.
Now, as an employer myself, if you are Self employed, definitely don't goto an er. Definitely ice it, and go see your GP, which may be able to xray it, or most likely refer you to a specialist. Some specialists may be interested in a cash offer for services if needed, so ask.
Keep icing it though. Think R.I.C.E. which stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.
Wrap it in an ace bandage as well to mobilize it.
Good luck hope it feels better!

You guys need not worry about your workers comp rates, self employed. Still hurts, painful even on crutches.

Sooner is better than later.

Get someone to drive you in in the next 48 hrs....not to the emergency room if you can help it since you aren't bleeding or stuck with a knife or have ooze dripping out of you. Call the primary care physician/office to get actual useful advice.

Knee injury suck.

Ask your doctor for a Voltaren prescription. It is diclofenac based gel that works magic on sore knees and other inflamed joints (not shoulders or hips due to more tissue). I get mine in Mexico for under $15 and no prescription required. US there is a co-pay of $20 to $40 depending on your coverage :-(. I use it for L4 spine dam age and arthritic hands. I asked the surgeon who replaced my knee if I could apply Voltaren when the knee started aching and he simply replied, ‘that’s our go to for inflamation’. Told him I didn’t need a prescription when he offered to write one!
