What's up with all the apparent chest bruising?

Whenever I go somewhere warm (no wetsuit) or haven't surfed for a few months (June through mid-Sept), the skin over my lowest ribs look like this even after 30+ yrs of paddling around on a surfboard.

Heck, even after a long surf they will look like this....but at least somewhere around November they'll not be so tender.
