Keeping public schools closed is a racist policy...

I think a 77% minority of the historically oppressed are the oppressors just desserts. Grow, little minority, grow! (It might not be that bad, y'know.)
True, until you look at the private school class rosters. Let the lemmings have their public schools.

So is Duffy saying the virus is racist?

I agree.
Many private (mostly white) schools are open without any problems at all regarding covid. The virus isn’t the problem.

The use of the virus to have this nonsensical non science based policy is the problem.

Schools are open all over the country. We sent my son and a friend to Colorado to train wrestling for two weeks with a high school team in Denver. Their schools are fully open, full schedule and they are having wrestling meets state wide.

Great news!

77% minority. Does this make them a majority?

Closing the schools is racist but so is opening them because it results in racist test scores. It also results in a lot of gender confusion. Checkmate.

Time to pull them out of the public schools. Look at all the dum dums on here who teach in them. Public school teachers are overwhelmingly from the bottom 2/3rds of their graduating class.

my junior high school was 20% white and high school was 25% white.

it was weird when school employees referred to “minority students” when it was actually the vast majority they were talking about.

I found out rather quickly that bringing this up was a no no.

Actually opening schools is racist

But the rush to get back to normal, by securing the child care necessary to truly open the economy, is coming into sharp conflict with many teachers, who want vaccines and airtight mitigation protocols before agreeing to return to schools. Most parents of Black and Latinx students share their concerns. According to one recent study, only eighteen per cent of Black parents and twenty-two per cent of Latinx parents would prefer to send their children back to in-person schooling full time, compared with forty-five per cent of white parents. Over fifty per cent of Black and Latinx parents prefer to keep their children in remote learning.
Great. Let's give them what they want. Shut the public schools down entirely. Most of these kids need to be given the 3 R's until the 8th grade and then a hard hat and some work boots.

@Duffy LaCoronilla The teachers have no intention of reopening full time in the Fall. The ones who've leaked us information say the unions are just stringing parents along so they don't find alternatives before next school year. If you son is anything like you, he's smart and deserves better than this System. All they want to do is enstupify boys like yours and put them in a dress. It's not like back in our day when SB County public school teachers were actually smart, decent people. Now, not so much.

Was listening in on my son’s English class the other day.

They were talking about a plan by some folks here to paint a blue line all over the city at 20ft above sea level so everyone can see what will be under water “in 5-10 years” from climate change caused sea level rise and how people (property owners) were opposed to the idea.

Now let’s just put aside the claim that in 5-10 years (!!!!!!) we will see 20 feet of sea level rise for just a second....

...the discussion revolved around the question of why in the world would anyone oppose this idea. One student brought up something about property owners not wanting to be charged extra for insurance and the teacher said....

”No, that can’t happen. Insurance companies can’t charge people money for what they think might happen in the future...”

Um, should we tell her?

PS: my son has been doing about 1/3 of his classes through SB City College and getting double credit (HS and CC credit).

He’ll have over a year worth of college done before he graduates high school.

I don't understand. What does sea level have to do with English? Were they reading environmental doom porn? Did Greta Thunberg write a novel that they are reading in English class?

Hahahahaha. What an imbecile and the data bears this out. Teachers are the bottom third of their graduating classes in majors that are already a joke. They're maybe fine teaching ESL to Mexico's poor which is what California public schools do. They're useless teaching the 3 R's to kids with any wits to rub together. Every smart person I know who taught public school out of college quit within 5 years.

Awesome. I saw an article in the Washington Examiner about how college-educated kids were going back to trade school to earn a real living. I have a friend whose kids all earned a trade certificate from the CC in high school so they always had something to fall back on. It's pretty clear a huge chunk of time in high school is just wasted.

They start (some) classes by having a few students read local news stories. This was one of those.

Yeah, we don’t really have any set path for him partly because I don’t think there are set paths to take anymore.

One of his friend’s dad has been mentoring him a little bit and giving him some very part time employment on occasion.

The dude is multi multi millionaire (wouldn’t surprise if he was worth a billion or more), has a bunch of rental properties all over the place, a construction company and who knows what else.

Started out working construction, never went to college.

My boy is a very lucky dude. He has several male role models in his life (the above guy, myself, wrestling coaches, and the entire collective jungle of our BJJ academy).

It’s almost a foregone conclusion that he will get a degree though.

Almost.

There are jobs in my field that I’m significantly more qualified to do than most of the current crop doing them but I’d never ever be able to get those jobs because I do not have a college degree. Not a complaint, just how it is.

BTW, what do you think is the teacher’s union ultimate play here?

Are they just really that afraid of covid? I doubt it.

Is it simply a cynical leveraging for more “funding”?

Is there a deeper, beyond the scope of education, agenda?

One thought that’s been mulling around in my idiot brain is...being that it seems to be LAUSD and SF pushing this and considering that at many of the schools in these are simply outright dangerous places to work (due to potential violence) that the teachers, having had a taste of working through zoom, simply dread the thought of going back to teaching in person.

Any insight?

This is Robert Kiyosaki's famous point. THose who went to college often work for those who didn't.

My 3 boys are all doing the jits now.

You have a right to complain about this. The best engineers I know started out on the production line with no degree. There's no reason I need a degree to do what I do. Much of it is a black art. The formal math and physics training definitely helps, but can also be learned in an apprenticeship program. Most engineering profs are useless at actual R&D.

Teacher fear is a big part of it but there's an obvious political agenda. Not being devious and evil like them, I don't know. We read their list of demands in June and it went something like, "Free healthcare for all, etc. etc." There's no way to pay for this with no tax base. Bond sales are down and interest on the national debt is skyrocketing as a percentage of the total budget, so I'm skeptical money printer can go brrr... forever. Most empires descend into profligate deficit spending and monetary devaluation as they decline.

I'm sure history won't repeat this time though. MMT says things will be different this time. :roflmao:
