Being a knuckle dragging hole digger, it was a while before I learned that I could use Zoom with a virtual background.

Just got done with my first zoom for one of my classes. Everybody interacts a lot more with the message chat and microphone. The instructor encouraged everybody to turn on the cameras. Not one person did lol.

So apparently the new thing happening now is "Zoom Bombing".

You're all logged in to your Zoom meeting, doing you do, looking at all of your colleagues. Then all of a sudden, instead of their happy faces you get porn!!!!

Seems Zoom is the new platform for hacking....

I honestly don't get all the Zoom hate.

Pre-Covid I'd be flying all over the place, often for a single 1 hr meeting. Now the biggest inconvenience in my daily life is having to get up early or log on late to accomodate someone in another time zone. Also no more commuting.

With the lack of personal contact these days, I appreciate video calls in 1:1 and small meetings. I find that it really does create a kind of "presence" that is lacking with phone-only.

On the personal side, Zoom, FaceTime etc has been a nice way of keeping in touch with friends and family that we no longer see due to Covid.

Both of my parents were totally unwilling to join video calls - "no, that's not for me".

I literally had to stand in front of my dad, holding an iPad in his face, to get him on a video call with close family friends (he was dying, it was Covid, they would never see him again). And he loved it! He was like, that was great we should do more of that.

That's what I think of when when I hear people complaining about Zoom.

I'm also on a dead-boring Zoom call with 76 people right now, and it's way easier to surf the erbb and eat snacks than if we were in a giant conference room.
