Yeah, he was riding a Dark Arts board in the “warmups“ but with so much on the line it’s a no brainer that he’d chose a tried and true PU/PE with his tried and true fins setup.

I was out there with him on his warm ups and I didn't see him on a Dark Arts.

I wasn't out there on his warmups on purpose. I was surfing Lowers before the Fiji contest and I look over and was like "holy sh!t that's JJF". Some people didn't even notice him he was so chill and mellow. I talked to him for a quick second and he said he was warming up for the trestles event and he would be headed to Fiji in a few days. No Dark Arts.

I dont think he warmed up at Lowers after the Fiji event (if he did, it was only 1 day) and then he did not warm up at all on the day of the event. I never saw him on a dark arts.

A wave came, and I swear John was going to go right... and at the last minute he turns and goes left - just as I was dropping in towards the bottom of the wave. I kicked out and thought... oh sh!t, if someone got that on camera and posts a video of me dropping in on JJF I'm gonna be labeled forever as a guy that drops in on people! The left mushed out and I immediatly said sorry and, thankfully, he apologized and said sorry too and he was indeed going to go right but some kid went right so he went left. We laughed it off but sheesh! Coulda been bad.
