...he's not dead, is he? This Corky Carroll article in the OC Register quotes some guy who thinks he is:

Did Jackie Dunn die of a drug overdose?

Last time I saw Jackie Dunn he was wandering around the crowed at the US Open in '96, saw him a few years earlier working the night shift at the Del Mar Denny's. If he's dead, RIP, if not, Corky Carroll needs a better fact checker! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/monkey.gif" alt="" />

Good story...the couple times I talked to him he seemed like a good guy; I didn't realize who he was at first, while I was talking to him I put 2 and 2 together and was like, crap, I'm talking to Jackie Dunn!! I hope he didn't die of a drug overdose, that would bum me out.

I remember that centerspread of him at Pipeline. If I'm not mistaken, it said something like "not a drop out of place." I marveled at the wave and the guts it took to ride it. So honored that I get to see that stuff up close nowadays.

I paddled for that wave with him. Still remember it like it was yesterday, Absolutely flawless Pipe. He was calling it even though I was on the inside. It was already vertical and inside he knew I wouldn't go.

We were good friends and surfed Pipe a lot together in the late 70's. Absolutely effing bonkers. Really! Screw loose bonkers when it came to paddling under jacking 12 foot ledges. Jackie Would not stop paddling when it was clear the wave was already concave and impossible, only pulling back at the last horrific nano second.

He scared the poop out of me he was so nuts.

There were some really brave hell chargers back then, Doug Brown, Brian Bulkley, Bruce Hansel and Marvin Foster and more.

Jackie made everyone else look relatively thoughtful.

this one?
Hey, I took that photo--of the boards (see the url).

Actually, that is not the shot. He was in the barrel in the one I'm thinking of (er mag). A near identical shot was in the other mag (ing), but it was a darker exposure. Funny how the mind remembers these things.

That shot was a classic and they made it into a poster. Earl Warren jr high school above Pillbox, 1977, they gave that poster away to us as a "prize" if you sold a certain number of mag subscriptions.
Jackie was I think just 20 when that was shot, I was 18. It was HUGE, terrifying and absolutely flawless Pipe. Although it was not breaking (occasionally just capping), it was standing up and catchable on the 2nd reef. That is how he managed to launch into this thing from behind the peak.

I can't read the boards dimensions, I think it says 7'8". A 7'6" Lightening Bolt pin tail was pretty much everyone's standard back then. No idea what length the crew prefers today.

My only memory of pipeline is of jackie Dunn at Huge second reef . I sat on the beach fresh of the plane and 19 yrs old , there was so much spray it felt like it was light rain and the beach shook like an earth mover was going by. I looked at a big set and watched jackie Dunn take of on a giant set wave as he faded right, for what seemed like 300 yds. At the last second ,he timed the huge inside tube perfectly and flew out with spit. I didn't see anyone else do that . I also remember a guy doing a head stand on a huge set!! That place is insane and the guys that have it wired are fearless.

The headstand guy was part of the Kailua gang, forgot his name, really nice guy though. Jim 'Bummer Jim' Devlin would know.

Truly great description btw Skip. That was definitely the period I was around, sounds so familiar I can smell it. What year are you talking, sounds like about 77 to 80.

Doug 'Roach' Brown would also do insane sh!t like that, huge 'S' turns and fades on the drop.

But no one was as high twitch spring loaded as Jackie. There were a couple of years there where he was undoubtedly the best out there. Lopez had fazed out a bit and Russel had notched down a few, Ronnie Burns and Derek Ho were yet to appear.
