Man, what a drag. Good memories from the Fig and going into his shop, living there in the late 80’s early 90’s when there was still some of the old time H. B. Surf ghetto vibe.
Being around the same age this resonates very soundly.

Never met him, but I remember listening to his surf report on KROQ back in the early 90's when I had a job driving from San Diego to SFV every day. Sounds like he was a good guy and will be missed by many. RIP Rockin 'Fig!

just got into town last night and saw this info on the isntgram action. fug. always such a cool guy in the water, such a cool guy to us wandering in the shop as kooky inland kids, still always cool enough to acknowledge you as the years wentby. he hooked me up with a SMOKIN deal on a board that el nino fall (97?) after I walked in bleeding with two pieces of baord under arm.

after a while not surfing I had a 6’10 rockin fig in my early 20’ all my friends would laugh at me ask me wheres the swell

Fig was an absolute fixture in downtown HB for many decades, with his small old school surf shop on Main, and was the voice of many of the major surf competitions in town. (Not to mention the morning surf reports on KROQ for about 20 years.) Dude was only 64, looked way younger, was winning age-level surfing contests, and suddenly dropped dead from a heart attack.
