Hello all,

My name is Michael Yukimoto and I started a surf brand. I've been a fan and contributor on the erBB for a while now and wanted to let everyone here know first.

The brand name is SURFICTION. I started it with my own savings after I had to move away from the ocean to take care of my folks. I wanted to stay connected with surfing and the creativity and imagination surfing gives me, so this was an important personal project.

I wanted to create a brand with depth and I wanted to capture the romance and imagination that surfing creates. A lot of my inspiration comes from science fiction and early 80's surf art. There is also a story element within Surfiction, that tells a story of climate change and intergalactic space travel.

All products and packaging are made from recycled and/or organic materials. Currently, I'm using a blend of 50% RPET (made from plastic bottles) and 50% organic cotton in my recycled tees. They're also made in the USA and printed and packaged locally.

I personally could not connect with a lot of current surf brands and grew tired of the cycle of reused images and content. I wanted to create something fresh and unique. WSL, big airs, boardporn, bikini ass and all that is great but why not create something different I thought. I grew to love surfing because of the exploration, mystery and really the romance that I feel is missing nowadays. Also the connections we make being exposed to nature and progressing to get better.

I don't have any investors, corporate backing or any real "experience" in the "industry". If anybody here has any tips or recommendations, please let me know. I'm always looking for ways to create new content and I'm really hoping to get the surfing community to contribute to the brand in any way.

Please use this promo code to get 20% off the website, just for erBB: erbb20
It's good until the end of this month. I know $35 a shirt isn't cheap but I can only print in low quantities at the moment but you'll love the quality of the shirts. Thank you for all your support and help throughout the years.

I always though there is a niche for a Creature / Braindead version of a surf brand.

Having built a few brands myself (not specifically surf), I would encourage finding some wholesalers to keep the cash flow rolling and inventory turning over. Either online wholesalers or brick and mortar. Make a small catalog and start cold pitching stores that you like, all over the US.

Good luck.

Thanks Racer1 for the advice. I have experience in the nonprofit sector while I was working with Goodwill but wholesale is definitely new to me. I'll definitely try to reach out locally first and hopefully someone will be interested! We have a local SBI (Wavelengths) in Fresno that I could try to reach out to. I know they have a shop in San Luis Obispo as well.

Let me know if need freelance art... I have been designing "surf art" for surf companies nearly 25 years.

Launching with only 4 graphics seems a bit light.

One of my friends helped launch Volcom with Wooly. Said they launched with two shirts and a sticker. lol.

But yeah, to OP, I'd print less of each design and more designs. Sure you're going to pay more per shirt, but sitting on too much inventory that isn't selling is a killer of small brands.

Hi Rickoray, cool. Do you have a website or any examples of your work? I'm definitely down to check it out! Yea, 4 is a little small but for now, I've only told my inner circle and this site haha

Hey Racer1,

Yes definitely. I'm definitely a noob at this and ordered maybe a few more shirts than I should've but I think I should get through this initial batch...which is about 35 shirts per design. I just wanted to get an idea of what sizes might sell better...and I didn't know the screen printing process and their MOQs. Great advice and I think I'll go with more designs and small quantities once I get through this first batch...I wouldn't mind some support from the erBB :) haha j/k kinda...

lol, it's sorta the going rate for most surf brands. The blanks itself being made in the USA and from recycled and organic materials is quite costly. But yea, for some, it's definitely a little pricey. The 20% discount makes it $28...haha

After contemplating a bit, I think I'll sell them cheaper...dropped to 29.95. Smaller margins but I'll be stoked if more people will wear it and support the brand. The 20% off still applies for erBB members. Thanks!

IMO I would branch out of plain black and white shirts. Probably my biggest T-Shirt shopping frustration. White shirts stain easily (maybe I'm projecting LOL) and eventually change color over time in the wash. Black shirts fade quickly and are too hot in the sun. Maybe have some simple yellows, blues, etc to change things up.

I realize that adding colors adds cost, but I think it would help. Good luck

Rattimus has been on here a long time (Design Forum).

Hey Rattimus, if you do end up branching out with the tshirt designs, I like the idea of having the pictures on your homepage on a shirt. San Onofre underwater and the guy surfing with the earth in the background would be cool.
