I thought at the time that was a bad move, but OTOH I just heard a couple talking heads who were commenting on the DOJ opening a new investigation on Comey's leaking to reporters. In it, these commentators they're speculating that Comey's motivation for that late breaking public announcement was to cover his own ass in connection with his illegal leaking activities, not for other political considerations.
