how do I make my first surfboard fin?

go get some good plywood from home depot, its like $15 for 2'x4' of 9 ply birch plywood. trace an existing fin you like onto cardboard, then transport that to the plywood. cut out the fin blank. now your goal is to foil it correctly. what you want for now is to have the thickest point of the fin 1/3 of the way back. in front of that point it should curve in and behind it should curve in. what you are looking for is an elongated teardrop shape as you look from the top of the fin. to get this, i have found that a clamp or vice and a orbital sander work best. i picked up a cheap one and a pack of 25 hook and loop 60 grit. its working well so far.

make a few before you glass 'em, they get better as you do more.
