Oh most knowledgable and crazy ERBB, what say you about houses with swimming pools?

Pros and cons?

Looking at buying a house, and one has come up that is a nice place, and it has a pool. What are the maintenance costs, etc... I have a six year old girl who can swim already.

Get a mechanical inspection on the pool equipment: pump, pump motor, main filter, pool vacuum. Look for loose tiles and loose coping.

Do shedding trees overhang the pool? Do you know about chlorine needs for a pool?

Just some questions you need to answer for yourself.

I swim daily and like cold water so I seldom heat my pool. When it gets below 62 I break out the 3mm short john. If you have kids they are not going to go near the pool if it's under 75 so heating it is going to cost money. My pool service cost 125 a month and the guy cleans it once a week.

Mahalos for all the replies!

Just thinking about water, electric, cleaning costs and the time to care for it. Have thought about the water it uses and how kinda wasteful it is. Thought about busting up the deck and removing, then filling it with good soil and turning it into a garden. Although it might be worth it for my daughter to enjoy, have friends over.

My Dad grew up with a pool at his house with 2 brothers and a sister. The stories they tell about it are :roflmao:

They used to all jump off the roof of the house into the pool. One day my Grandma has some of her work friends over and wants them to jump off the roof into the pool in front of her friends.

So they secretly build a dummy out of clothes and stuffed with newspaper and bring it up on the roof with them. In front of their audience, they pretend to fight over who is jumping off first, and throw the dummy headfirst onto the cement patio below. Screams of horror ensued :roflmao:

We have a swimming pool and it's very nice to have. We too have kids (5 and 8) who swim well. We use it like crazy. I would not consider a house without a pool at this point. It's really nice on summer days when you don't really want to go anywhere just to go out back and make a day of it.

I pay my pool guy $95 a months and it's well worth it. I tried to do it myself for about 6 months but ended up getting a crazy algae bloom and had to drain it. I would recommend getting a pool guy unless you really want to take the time to learn correctly about water chemistry and pump operation etc.

The pool is great to have when your kids are growing up. Lots of family memories. Not as much after they grow up and go to college. Cleaning service is about $75/month, plus something always comes up.
