Need some input from those in more southern latitudes. Trying to avoid getting scorched on the occasional trip to the tropics and sunscreen only goes so far. Like the idea of a hooded rash guard as you can just pull the hood down when you want but having wet rash guard covering ears seems uncomfortable. I'm very used to wetsuit hood but the inside of a wetsuit hood isn't wet 100% of the time. Is a hat with chin strap/buckle the better option?

Hooded for sure. Can’t believe these existed for quite some time now and they are a lifesaver when the sun is directly above you. Do not wear it before 11 AM or after 3 PM and you won’t be a total kook. you can always pull the hood down when you see a set wave coming and they both give you the opportunity to burn somebody with a built-in excuse “sorry man I didn’t hear you hooting at me”

you will look like less of a dork with a cap rather than a floppy hat.

no matter what hats are a pain on ducknives.

rash guards make sure it’s not going to get sucked over your head if you bail, friend had a near drowning from that. Not really but it made a standard wipe out shittier.

the Oneiil hooded rash guard with a built in cap is good.

So vain.

Get back to me when you have a mohs surgery on your nose where skin grafts are needed.
I already have!

Skin cancer runs in the family!

I quit surfing so it's all good.

But you are right.

I am vain.

I don't know where that comes from.

But I'm not wearing a fucking hat.

IF you wear a hat you have to own it.

And I can't.

But I support your right to make that choice.

I bet you think this hat is about you.
I think everything is about me.

I know it's not but I still think that.

I'm that vain.

When guys paddle up on their long boards with their floppy hats on.
I get embarrassed and have to look away.

I had some dreams
They were cancers In my nose
Cancer in my nose

Translation: my herd mentality won't let me do anything untoward.
Lots of dorks wearing hats.

I won't wear a hat on land neither.

When I see a grown man wear a baseball cap I have to turn away.
(Like a newborn baby it just happens every day.)

But I honor your right to make that choice.

As my girl friend says, the key to wearing a hat is you got to own it.

I can't.

Maybe that suggests some weakness of character on my part but I accept that.

I don't wear sunglasses either.

Or own a cell phone.

I hate wearing collared shirts.

I won't wear black clothes.

I won't talk during sex.

I think women sport casters are clownish.

When my parents died, I had to eat all the food in their fridge, just on some principle.

I've never bought a new car.

I just have weird things I won't do.

It's visceral feelings biasing my decision making.

Hooded rash guard. My wife got me the Florence Marine X one for Fathers Day. Great for midday scorcher sessions when you’re 48 and the dermatologist says you have the skin of a 70 year old man (same dermo told Nate Florence he has the skin of an 80 year old haha).

on a related subject, Flynn Novak is the most underrated goofy foot surfer ever

Get the hooded rash guard. Bring the boonie. Try it out. Report results. You're a white guy traveling in the tropics so no one really cares whether you look core/gnar/cool/whatever. I agree it's much kookier in latitutde 32 and above if you don't rip, but who cares.

TBH I haven't tried surfing in a boonie. I tried paddling in an under armor rash guard and there was too much drag down the front of my torso and arms. It's probably better if you get something made for swimming that's tight and wear trunks over it. Either way you will look dumb but it's better than being burned.

Do you have a narrow neck and shoulders? Every hat looks worse if you have a pencil neck.

If I were surfing a lot under a tropical sun in might bias my decision making.

I'm not too proud to change my mind.
