The loophole to that is pretty easy.

Book 90 days, pay a "deposit" of one week. At the end of the week "inform" the owner of your dissatisfaction with (-insert stupid reason here-). You're gone, rented and paid for only the week you wanted in the first place. No public authority has the balls to go after owners for cancelations.

Boom, restrictions done.

At least that was the local workaround here.

Do people actually rent houses for 30 days at a time?

Or is it a work around to advertise it for 30 days with the understanding the "lease" will be cancelled as soon as vacation is over?

My buddy works in marketing and leads teams from wherever he feels like it.

He has done a few stints on the islands using rentals like this.

I think 30-days fully furnished (bonus if vehicle included) is a real sweet spot for short term rentals and provides insulation from vacation party people while enabling you to jack up rates during high season.

My buddy and his wife decided that instead of buying a house they'd just rent for month(s) at a time in places they think are desirable. Will change once she is done interviewing/finds a job, but for the time being they are living it up.

That wave pool project does seem like a grossly insensitive and completely unnecessary tourism development project, even by Hawaii standards, where building anything and everything to sustain mass-market industrial tourism was considered to be ok -
Preach. There has to be a Texan behind it. Only a Texan would want to build a wave pool in Hawaii.

Also is this really true???

they called it shark country for a reason but in the old days it was just hammerheads and white tipped reef, not tigers and great whites like now. They call it Haubush now but it's really sand tracks for those that remember. Haubush was on the inside of Shark Country where the hau trees were. Right in front of the beach house we grew up and learned to surf at.

the guy with the dreds is kanani langley younger brother of my elementary school classmate Eli who was one of the original members of Koa Puna.not as bad as Tommy Phillips though.
The guy with the pony tail taking off over the shark is another haubush old timer who rides little fishes and old logs.
lucky he was on his tanker.
I was out there many years ago when a big one came in on a wave from the outside and a bunch of young girls in the line up started screaming and paddling like idiots to the shore. We all just lifted our legs and arms out of the water out of caution but the sponge heads were freaking out trying to stay near to us.

Quick trip for a few business meetings in town morphed into long weekend. Have not stayed at Royal Hawaiian for ~30yrs. Still paradise, warm, and welcoming. Surfed canoes with my bride, good food, atmosphere etc. Heading to NS and will hopefully sneak a session or three before returning to the mainland. It may have changed but with the right attitude most certainly not “done.”1667679478489.jpeg

The old Hawaiian saying is something like "when the Nawiliwili flower blossums, the sharks bite." Ancient Hawaiians noticing a correlation between Nawiliwili flowers and sharks biting, which is in Sept/October. What we modern day call Sharktober here in Hawaii. Tiger shark moms, after giving birth in the summer are so hungry from not being able to chase food while pregnant that they are known to bite/eat anything, including humans. Majority of bites happen in October when they do happen. Sightings also go up in October.

I like to picture ancient Hawaiians sitting on rocks, under a tree on the beach, going "eh, remember last year when Keoki got bit by a shark on the leg and we had to pull him to shore under all those Nawiliwili blossums? And den da year before that Kanani was surfing with a nawiliwili flower in her hair and that tiger shark chomped her board? That was weird yea? If only we knew how to avoid the sharks biting us."
