Im planning on moving to Hawaii instead of California in late october and renting an apartment with one of my friends who's dad already lives there.

I am pretty much in need of advice on all things Hawaiian as far as precautions, transportaion and just how expensive things can be there. My dad's friend had lived in Hawaii for 5 years in '81. He told me some encouraging things and some not so encouraging things. I really want to hear it from a surfer's perspective. Are there any good paying surf related jobs? Am I going to get my ass beat just for stepping foot on a beach with a surfboard and not being a local.Wheres the best place to live on Oahu?

I should have $4500 saved up by the time I leave, how long could that amount of money last? And if you were in my position, would you move to Hawaii just for surfing alone?

My goal is to surf everyday, what better place to live than Hawaii where surfing is such a huge part of the culture? List any and everything you can think of as far as advice.Your help would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys.

No one can predict your future, you can get lucky, or maybe not.
You're planning to embark on the adventure, do you want to ruin it with expectations, beliefs, and standards?
Be real, don't show off, keep your head down, eyes open, change what you don't like, be adaptable, and remember....this is going to the the first day of the rest of your life.

i moved to hawaii with a lot less money than that..
sure, i dont have a car, or a house, or a real job but i'm surfing at least every other day.
advice: because hawaii is so remote to the mainland, your ohana is important. get involved with the community and you will be welcome. oh yea and stay away from the stripjoints. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Here are some facts about living in Hawaii. Rent, mortgages, gas, utilities are expensive. If you can tolerate the aformentioned items you'll have no problem living here. Like most places, some will welcome you into the line up, some won't. I surely had to work my way into the spots I frequent. Aloha spirit still lives in Hawaii, its just a little harder to find nowadays with so many people living here.

You are stoked, you are going to get great waves and have a good time. Stay clear of drugs, be humble and respectful, and learn a bit about Hawaiian history before you go. A simple book to read that will get you there is Gavan Daws, "Shoal of Time." If you make eye contact with someone giving you MEAN stink eye, smile extra big and say "How's it going, my name's _______." Despite what you have heard, Hawaiians are the coolest people in the whole world, just a little jaded on haoles at first. Read the history and you'll know why, and I promise you'll appreciate the place more and have a great time. Show them you're not the typical arrogant haole, hang with the locals, and you will discover the beauty of a culture that gave the sport of surfing and the concept of aloha to the world. Good luck and malama pono 'oe.

I'd suggest plan on getting a part time (at least) job and join a canoe club or something ... you'll make friends and feel more part of the community that way. If you come over and act like you're on vacation, it'll feel like a vaction, which is not as fun as really living somewhere IMO.

Then your 4500 will last a long time!
