Good board for Mentawais (steep, hollow)?

Hey guys, been surfing a long time, now 41 and surf SFOB and other spots here in Norcal. Weigh 190, and 6'2. Only surf about once or twice a week at the most, and my best days are behind me. So of course I signed up to go to Indo and surf the Mentawais for 6 days.

My current setup is a Channel Islands 6'6, 2 5/8 squashtail. Good for catching mushier waves, not so much for steep and hollow.

I'm thinking a step up board of about 6'8 or 6'9 in addition to my 6'6 to bring with me for overhead, hollow days.
I'm an ok paddler, a little slow to my feet, so I need as much help as I can get. I just want to make the wave and not get hung up at the top, which happens to me now a bit.

I'll be lighter without all the wetsuit/booties/gloves I deal with now.

Any suggestions for dimensions and type of board?

you should go with whatever board you're really comfortable with. However going with a step up to you normal everyday board is not going to help you get into waves easier or earlier there. i brought a 6'3. 6'5, 6'6 and a 6'8 and the 6'3 (my dd) was easily the best one. it was also the thinner/lowest volume of the bunch. the 6'8 i used once on a pretty big day and the other 2 just did ok but i remember going down to the 6'3 and the drops just got a lot easier.

so aside from wanting a stepup for bigger days i would have your shaper just modify something off your favorite board. adjust the rocker and maybe foil down the rails a little. have fun out there!

So far away
www.mardawg.com
that's my board that retodd posted up
i think that would be the perfect one board to bring to the mentawais
at 6'2 and 190 you could go 6'4 and that would be the board you ride every day
nkpheous is right about not needing a bunch of board. i feel like too much volume will hang you up

get a trx and do atomic pushups every day until your trip

i do 10 of these every morning i don't surf, with some pop ups and other poop in the mix

The most crowded place on earth
Never been to the Ments but I would think if you have something that works at OBSF, I wouldn't screw with it too much. I bought a step up for the North Shore last winter and found that I probably would have liked my HPSB just fine up to about overhead and a half.

I don't entirely agree with some things posted. A few years back I went to Tonga with a 6-8(DD) and a 7-4 Step up/semi.I rode the 7-4 on the bigger days.It was way to much board but, with the aggro Aussie'/Kiwi's and the tight back side barrel I prefered it over the 6-8.Definetly got in earlier. Some waves you just need to worry about making, not turning on

Most people ride hpsbs for good waves (more tail rocker, round pins, etc), but my buddy likes his groveler quad for heavy rifles. Gets him in early, gives him more speed and maneuverability in the barrel. He's been there about 30 times. To each his own.

?
I put this into Google translate but nada.

Not all spots are spitting barrels. Not all swells are spitting barrels. Not everyone is ready for rifles, kandui left, hideaways, hts, greenbush, etc.

My boards for a mentawai trip would be much different from my last trip.

6'3 and 5'11 hpsb's, 5'6 krypto and some other small quad (superbuzz maybe) I'd love to go back to rifles with the hypto. Damn I gotta get back there someday

Superbuzz for sure and my f4 would cover about any thing I will drop into and my 6'7" mbm in case it gets big
