Headed out tomorrow...right into a snow storm. All good though. I'll be there for a couple days with my wife and neither one of us have ever been before. Any must see attractions? Places to avoid? Best cheesesteak?

Try Bridget Foy's restaurant ... food was really good. Went to Geno Steaks - famous cheesesteak location .... have to say wasn't impressed. Moshulu - is a restaurant/bar on a old sailing vessel docked on the river - was a cool/unique place to check out.

Get whiz on your cheesesteak. Don't be a Caliboi with your provolone or swiss or whatever froofy sliced solid state cheese. Embrace the canned cheese- assimilate or gtfo. And spicy pickled cherry peppers.

This couple have a good travel podcast and are Philly natives. You can find the episode on the apple podcast as well.

Scroll down 5-6 frames to their October 2019 post

I haven't been personally but I trust their judgement, been listening to their podcast for years.

Off the top of my head. South Street and Penn’s Landing could be fun. There’s some good museums in town but Covid? Cheesteaks everyone talks about Pat’s VS Geno’s(Gino’s?). My vote is for

only about 10 people got shot there ystdy.

the communities' approach to this?

thoughts and prayers.
I had to go there for work about 10yrs ago. We had to drive to this factory converted into an office building located outside of the city - can't remember the name of the town but just past the baseball/football stadiums. The drive was sketchy - one day while at a stop light - some guy tried to open our rental car door. At the office building - all females were required to be escorted to their cars in the parking lot ... and it was recommended that no one go alone to their car at night. In the city - by the monuments, museums, etc - felt much safer to walk around at night.

I haven't been back since covid began but skip a cheesesteak and go straight for a roast pork. Johns Roast Pork in South Philly DeNics in reading terminal market, spend some time in reading terminal and take the block or two walk towards chinatown. If you insist on a cheesesteak get one at Johns Roast Pork, get one pork w/ rabe and sharp provolone and a cheesesteak. Genos/Pats are bullshit, do not get a sandwich with cheese wiz, no one actually eats that sh!t. Dizengoff on sansom st.

I'm hearing the city is a little more lawless than usual these days but you probably wont encounter much of that outside of teenage black girls that might make fun of your appearance.
if in center city on foot stay within the red lines. There's a lot more outside the red lines if you have a car at your disposal
If you pm me any specific questions

Wissahickon Park/Valley green for a walk in the snow and while you're up there cruise around Chestnut Hill and West Mount Airy. Take west river or kelly drive to lincoln drive out and Germantown ave all the way back to center city for a the full socio economic spectrum.

If you're going to go to the art museum steps make a point to actually go in the art museum, also the barnes foundation. Mutter museum if you're into medical oddities

Yeah the podcast I mentioned above said the same thing and I think they rec the same place you did and the pork sandwich.

Really? I can understand thinking its gross and it seems polarizing, but what % of sandwiches do you think are sold with it?

Pats/Genos/Jims I'd guess around 80? But those pretty much the equivalent of a break bowl chowder at fishermans wharf.
Normal people getting a neighborhood cheesesteak probably 10% if at all, it's not really an option most places since it's fucking gross.

Anything but Pats/Genos. Johns Roast Pork is the best IMHO (even for cheesesteak). Ishkabibble's, Campos, Jim's, Tony Luke's...

Bitar's is a hole in the wall Mediterranean place, super cheap but tasty. McGillians for the novelty, not really sure what's going on with the pandemic. Parc, Fork, Suraya, Zahav, Poi Dog would recommend.

Museum area and Kelly drive and boathouse row might be pretty with the snow. Liberty bell, susan b anthony house, old city, etc.

Surfadelphia gives some good advice and agreed, it's a bit more lawless. Experience is different, family owns a store front restaurant business in university city area and appear to have more frequent issues.

Thanks for all the input ! Just got back. We didn't get to spend as much time in the city as I hoped, but it was a great trip anyway.

We saw a lot of Amish country and had fun touring the countryside. Cool place in the winter, but it must be amazing in Sping/Summer/Fall. Locals were pretty classic. Lots of people eggy about wearing masks in their presence....as in making it a major point to tell you they aren't needed around there and trying to convince us to take ours off. Lol. We politely declined their offers.

As far the city, we stayed right above Independence Hall and had a killer view of it and the surrounding parks. Hit some bars in Old Town, tripped around South Street, tried to go to John's Roast Pork but had to order by phone and pick-up times were more than an hour out, so wound up getting a cheesesteak (prov wit) at Jim's South Street. Good stuff, but not mind blowing. I guess there's only so much you can do with a cheesesteak. Plenty of interesting folk around the city, but never felt in any sort of danger. Would love to come back when the weather is a bit more accomodating.

Nice. Remember, Philadelphia is never as bad as Philadelphians say it is.
Target September after Labor Day, weather is perfect and there's a good shot you luck into good, warm surf an hour east

How many times per day does a tourist run up the “rocky steps” and throw some punches at the top?

West of the Atlantic. East of the ICW.

Philly is a straight up shithole. Is there a worse major city in this entire country? If so, I haven't seen it. Other than a tiny slice right around Independence Hall the entire area for a 10 mile radius is a dump.
