Interesting concept, although the weather.com video was pretty minimal to say the least. I'm keeping my money on convection currents in the mantle causing tectonic plate movements.

Read a piece in the 90s about reoccurring extinction events (wish I could quickly find it so I could link it).

It was about the movement of our solar system with regards to the Milky Way's plane of rotation. Essentially, our system moves up and down in a sine wave about every 28,000 yrs and "stuff" happens when we cross the plane. But there is also the various spiral arms, so, sometimes the plane we pass through is relatively empty, so no problem, and sometimes it is extra full, but luck is a thing too.

And just the other day, the James Webb telescope found some new structures in the Milky Way that are likely 'streams' of matter from past galaxies that the Milky Way consumed that are in orbit about the central point. Probably means there is another thing to consider in all this.
