Does this mean I'm turning ultra right-wing?

That's the thing.

Cops walked into the situation and set the bar high straight away, no thinking.

There's no backing away from that, the escalation was inevitable.

If they waited for the song to finish and dealt with him privately, there would be no problem.
"Stop playing" is a high bar?

Not complying with armed cops is so dangerous.

It invites over reaction.

That it was a teacher doing it boggles my mind.

Once you put out a demand that you know it likely won't get followed, there's no way back out.

It can only escalate from there.

Wait for the song to be over, talk to him in private and do what you need to do.

Teacher was a dick but cops were also dicks.
Cops should be the smarter ones.

I never understood holding criminals to the higher standard than cops.

Apparently I’m unable to explain it. Maybe some else can? Nobody agrees with you in this case, Blue board or Red board. Surely someone more articulate (which is almost everyone that posts here) can?
Stop with the false consensus.

At least 3 people in this thread said it's bad policing.

But asking the guy to stop playing is a reasonable demand.

I'm not holding the guy to a higher standard.

I'm saying when you don't comply with armed LEOs it's very dangerous.

I would have waited for sure.

But I wasn't there.

The cops are gonna get what they are gonna get.

I agree that that sounds reasonable. I'm probably not using the right words.

When a cop puts a demand out, that he knows is likely to be disobeyed, there's no turning back.
A teacher in front of his students in control of a band.....

Once it's disobeyed, physical force is the only option left.
Being more tactile would have helped but I know cops don't care for that approach and that's the problem IMO.

Talking to the teacher away from the crowd would likely not end up like that.

You see this so often with benign traffic stops that escalate into physical confrontation for no good reason.

Part of the problem is availability cascades.

Think of all the interactions where the cops de-escalate. You don't see those videos.

When he cops back off the criminals feel it and become more aggressive.

Cops being aggressive cuts down and crime but you have more incidents where the cops rough people up.

Under reacting and over reacting both have consequences.

Teaching gives you hundreds of opportunities to over react in response to assholes baiting you.

I'll avoid 99 of them and then when I'm tired, I'll come in a little hot and then I am the fucking asshole.

But I'm like "what about the 99 times, I handled my sh!t in a tough social interaction where the other person was a fucking asshole?"

For a cop this is even more so.

Being in charge of groups of people's safety gives you more empathy for the cops.

Yes, lots of them are assholes

Interesting.

How do you think it would've ended if the away team band director had stopped the music as instructed when ordered...instead of what he did (including telling the cops to take him to jail)?

Or scenario two: he put his hands behind his back as instructed?
Without knowing why police are reacting like this to a bunch of kids playing music at a sporting event it's hard to say what should have happened. But it certainly doesn't seem like much legit law breaking was taking place

That's an easy sentiment to agree with but why the f--k did the stadium lights get shut off? That was pretty profound to me. Normally, anything High School football-related in a place like Birmingham gets a free pass. Starting QB is over legal BAC with an underage girl riding with? No need to make a fuss. Head Coach is trying to bang cheerleaders? So is the Principle, the Pastor, most of the school admins, the Mayor, and the DA or whatever office Roy Moore held.

The fact that the powers of local government were coming down on anything High School football adjacent in a place that's as obsessed with it as Alabama means something else is up. The residents are tired of the late night noise. The band directory said something critical of the chief of police at a city council open meeting.

I trip on people making lots of noise after 10.

So inconsiderate
The Santa Barbara bowl (music venue) is famous for this. Never an encore, everything shuts down at the minute and they shuffle everyone out. Nothing the powers that be fear more than rich idle Karens :drowning: :toilet:
