With people, the inside of the outside as someone said above, but with only myself on a given assumed beach break peak I will sit on the outside of the inside, However, if I'm feeling down on the crowd, or pressured, annoyed, ripped off or greedy for whatever reason I like to do the opposite of what everyone else is doing (as mentioned above).
I have found at my increasing age I will almost always shy away from the crowd.
