If you've spent any time at all in the water in and around the Outer Banks over the last 30 years, you've either seen him, heard him, or heard of him.
He was pretty polarizing at times - either you loved him or you didn't - but he was always as real of a surfer as you can get. Love it. Lived it.

No BS. Give it all you've got - no matter what you were given.

I always got:

"Walk the nose!"
"Do something!"

I have too many stories to tell and will leave that to people who knew him better than I.

RIP Del.

Always heard of Delbert and only shared the lineup, though I mostly hung down the beach. Being a bodyboarder not from the Banks I wouldn't roll right into the main peaks. Seen his patented fly away in person.

Lots of good friend that live up there that are really feeling his loss right now.

A second hand story from my bodyboard buddy Ryan Rhodes from up there is Delbert asked him if he knew why he called him a booger boarder? "Cause it's snot surfing"

R.I.P. Delbert, the Banks lost a true character.
