What are the pros and cons of going with a mercury, geico, etc...
I'm looking to save a couple bucks

Ive had Mercury for YEARS and they are the cheapest around. I have even responded to all the mailers from AAA, Geico, etc. and they dont come close.

And their CS was top notch when my Truck was totaled as well for my son when he got hit 3 times. Poor kid got tagged 3 times before he was 21.

I use AAA - get my DMV stuff done at their office instead of the dreaded DMV. I just got renters insurance through them for $80/year. If my truck gets broken into and stuff stolen, it's covered.

FYI, I went with metromile, one of the pay by the mile providers, and it's
slightly cheaper per month than what I was paying before with maxed
out coverage

the only kicker is when you take a road trip or something...your monthly
fee will go up.

I telecommute and put very few miles on my (old) truck so it feels like
I'm getting a good value for the money.

I checked that out and very good website that's for sure! It looks like my Ins. now offers some sort of discount based on miles as well. Got a call into my Broker to get more info.

the drawback, in my mind, is the fact that you have to keep a GPS transponder
in the vehicle to track travel...you can derive rate of speed with that info which
seems like a bit of a dicey proposition; how long until they factor that in to your
rates...

USAA is probably the best. You need to earn it though. I have Allstate. Never have had an issue, 1 claim in the past 15 years and it was handled smoothly. Just got my recent 6 month billing statement for next year. Full coverage, high limit liability, $325.00.

This is the future. One of my local friends has created a startup company a few years back. Essentially an automotive Black Box. Tracks vehicle location, speed, steering, braking, impact. Ford motor company is installing them on all of their new 2020 vehicles. So you get in a wreck in a Ford product and tell your story. Then the black box tells its story. This is the future.

I think this is wise from the perspective of forensics, but I do not
like the idea of it being used proactively to penalize drivers as by
the insurance provider.

the next step beyond that would be the adoption of the same tech
by the state to automatically ticket you for moving violations....

speeding, rolling stops, etc

A whole fleet industry actually polling for the access to this type of information. The private sector is just along for the ride. Ford is the leader. One of the major reasons I do not want to purchase a new vehicle.

Asset tracking. Traffic management. Stuff like acceleration/deceleration/wear and tear. all of this can be monitored.

much of this is already being done for fleet management

it's one thing when the employer is using it to monitor employees
(voluntarily) but what about private citizens?

the FastTrack toll system could also do this today by calculating
speed between vehicle scans through the system.

One of the most troubling things I see these days is this shift to let the technology do everything for you.

This is absolutely no substitute for being a driver. Somebody who is trained and experienced to operate a motor vehicle. The human/mechanical interface.

Buying a Subaru because if you buy a Subaru $300 goes to supporting animal rescue shelters is criminal.
