quiet night at home with a good book after work would be a fifth of vodka, with ice and a splash of soda water to keep me hydrated and functioning in the morning. That was 7 days a week for the last several years of my drinking. Last year or two I needed a few ounces of vodka in my coffee in the morning just to stop shakin and get on the subway without going into the DTs. Nurse a discreet cup of vodka all morning until I could get to lunch and drink ”respectably”

a night out actually drinking? shots, chaos, adventures, jail on a few occasions, damaged relationships with countless loved ones, all the good stuff. blackouts and bad decisions as far as the eye can see. But it was the last few years of round the clock drinking that would have quickly destroyed my liver in just a few more years
I shudder at the thought of this. I get terrible hangovers but certainly have/had a propensity to become an alcoholic. I luckily found a hen that isn't too keen on the stuff and prefers the ganja. She would look at me like I was a fool when I'd be acting all stupid on the sauce. Probably lowest point was on the night of my little bachelor party. Got all sh!faced and lost my friends. Had to call my wife (on another island) for help and she called her friend to come pick me up. I was hugging a parking curb just totally spent.

So I just slowly weaned alcohol out of my life. A beer or two here and there tickles my palette just right. But man do we like our herb!!!

The sad thing is- I know the rule and I actually DID some editing to cut down the number of sequential posts :foreheadslap:

Two new bottles arrived, Arran 10 and Glenfarclas 12... dying to try them but the flu caught up to me... probably for the better, I could use 1 week without drinking... or maybe 2 days will suffice.

No sense drinking these with a stuffed nose, might as well pour it down the drain. but damn these bottles are calling my name.

Stop fishing ffs! That sh!t will kill you!
I took last cobia season off to reset, it sucked because it's flat on the east coast all summer. Granted, all that drinking was from like 6 am to 6pm (on the boat) couple beers an hour. But man, those long days thinking 'when is the coastguard going to stop us' or all jacked up on blow 'is that the coast guard coming towards us" and dealing with generally drunk wasted people (myself included) were freaking exhausting. It wasn't about the fishing...I have since tuned everything in and it's insane how much better the vibe and actual fishing is. It's not like I don't allow any alcohol or herb on the boat anymore (for friends), but the 8 foot Yeti isn't stocked to the gills with booze and the cabin a walk in pharmacy. A six pack or two now a days for others.

And Subway mentioned it: The relationships I ruined with reallly cool people and longtime gf's is fcked up. The girls would always kind of try to hang in the drinking department with us and it got to a point where it was turning them into pretty consistent drinkers, affecting everything. Not cool at all. I do miss the chaos of going hard in the city sometimes, but we mostly only remember the fun times. Live and learn I guess...but some of us have to take the hardest way.

having a girlfriend who can party as hard as you can is never a good thing :shameonyou:

So true
And yeah, a drunken boyfriend, even with good intentions, can take a very moderate and well behaved woman and turn them in to drunks. Not proud of some of those early relationships. Far as I know most of those long ago exes have all gotten sober thankfully. Maybe they would have been drunks anyway, had I not stumbled into their lives. Either way, I certainly turbo charged the process

i mean, it’s all sex and booze and partying, so, two young consenting adults doing their thing having a great time (until it isn’t), so I don’t feel 100% responsible for how they turned out after being with me for 6 months to a few years

Yeah, they were more getting sucked into my orbit of drinking and looking the other way when the powder came out (or I just lied). Happy to say none were/are alcoholics and are living (seemingly) fulfilled lives.

lol one of my few exes from those teens and early 20s relationships that did NOT develop a drinking problem became a lesbian instead. Fukk me I turn them into drunks or lesbians, NTTIAWWT

wait. Does it count if one of the relationships STARTED in AA when I got sober for about a year in my mid 20s? She was already a problem drinker; we met and started shagging in early sobriety, I was still only 24 and she was like 30 I think. Became a pretty serious relationship, more so for her, alas…Of course we resumed drinking together. In fact it was shots of patron at her fathers place in Kapaa when she and I unilaterally decided to start giving moderate drinking a try again :foreheadslap:

last I heard she has been sober again many years now and lives upstate near her sober mom. Lonely, but alive and sober…she keeps in touch with my mom :foreheadslap::drowning:

Yeahhh that moderate drinking thing is always fun for like a week. My last two long time gfs both married the next guy they met within a year, so take that for what you will (I think a rebound marriage is suspect haha). They still reach out when sh!t really hits the fan, which I find weird. I was very close with their families though. Not really dating now, never have without drinking so kinda lost in that department.

im a broken record about this but yeah, if dating seems tough and exhausting/scary/nervy in early sobriety, don’t bother. It’s hard enough as it is (dating AND early sobriety ha) so make early sobriety as “easy” as you can.

also, sometimes hotties just fall into laps without the whole dating process and anxiety.

also, pornhub :dancing:

i think there is even a crude but funny slogan in the rooms about only dating your right hand for the first year of sobriety or something?

There were various episodes and even stretches of my young adulthood that rivaled Trainspotting, just with booze, and not (very much anyway) heroin. at least the seediness, the “one wrong step from the gutter or prison” lifestyle….not pretty

BINGO …. For me.
She thought waiting 2 years after Deb passed was an appropriate waiting time to approach me.
40+ years in knowing this woman from the Big Island of Hawaii.
Transition, was so smooth and easy, communication, likes / dislikes, etc.
One wonders, when they’re in their mid 70’s if, as a single person, this is how it’s going to be till the end. But up steps an opportunity to engage with a person that just wants to hang out with you. To be friends, lovers, to have companionship. 73 & 77.
I’ve been gifted, for some reason and like she’s said, “it’s me n’ you brah to the end”
Crazy sh!t ending up with a beautiful, blonde wahine. Just crazy.
