CI Single Fin Advice...

A shop where I live has one at a really good price.

It is 6'1"x20x23/4. I have always wanted one of these boards.

My questions is how good of a surfer do you need to be to ride one, and what type of wave do they do best in?

I am an okay surfer, good enough to have fun and go down the line. I surf mainly on the outer banks of NC and Wrightsville Beach, also in NC. I have heard that anyone can ride these boards, from beginer to expert.

I have never riden a single fin board, at the moment I am riding an MX and a Mongeral.
Also, I tend to surf more off my front foot, could this be a problem for me on a Channel Islands Single Fin? I was told not to worry about it.

Any feed back and or help would be great.

Thanks

It sounds like it's right up your alley. Have fun fooling around with the fin, moving it back and forth and trying out different fins. Learning how to properly ride a single fin is important if you want to be a well rounded surfer. Your surfing will vastly improve on your thruster as well.

It's fun!

TFAD...thank you! I have not slept well the past two nights for being so excited!! I can not wait. I just wanted to make sure I will be able to surf it and have fun. I have talked to some of the guys at CI and they said it should be no problem for me to make the leap. I saw the pics of your dad's on the other threads. I was hoping I could get your feedback... you da man!

Thanks a lot.

Any fin advice would be great too. I have no clue as to what to look for in a single fin.

It may help to watch someone ride one. This is a good place to start...

I don't own a CI single, but I'd love to have one. My current favorite board happens to be my 6'2" single fin, and I think it is because of some of the reasons TFAD stated above. You really learn to keep the board in the pocket, and how to use the wave to gain speed, not just your fin cluster. Plus, after learning to surf a single fin well, I'm quite confident that I'll be able to adapt to other boards as well.

Keep in mind though, I was a bit skeptical the first few times I rode the board. I felt as though I had to really hold back, and that I could do more on a thruster. Honestly, now I think I've pulled more re-entries and off the lips in a month on that board than I have in the past year.

Also (I'm a bit biased since I haven't tried any other fins) I swear by the True Ames 8" Norm Flex.

Thanks.
I am an okay surfer. Anything will help my surfing at this point. I also want to be realistic as to what my capibilities are. I just like to go down the line and make a few turns. I live two hours from the beach, so my water time is limited. I love the way the MX rides, but I can not ride it the way it should be ridden. I have heard that the single fins are fun, and pretty easy to ride. I really just want someting that will a lot fun when it gets small, and not have to ride a long board and/or work my butt off.

Thanks so much for all the feed back. As of right now I am going to pick it up on Saturday. I can not wait!
