I am looking to pick up a Flyer to add to the quiver. What dims would those who have experience with the Flyer recommend? I am 6'0" 185 lbs, 15 yrs. experience, and I would be surfing East Coast beachbreak.

i've had 4 flyers, and just ordered my fifth for my option when the waves don't suit the merrick five.

i'm 5'10.5" x 170-175, and i ordered a 6'1" x 19" x 2 7/16".

i rode a 6'2" x 19" x 2 1/2" when i was 185#.

Depending on conditions I have been mainly riding a 6'2" quad or a 5'10" Pavel Speed dialer.

IMO, a 6'1" to 6'2" with stock dims ought to work fine. I'm 5'10" x 160-165#. My latest Flyer WAS a 6'0" x 19" x 2-3/8", XTR. Great boards, and you won't be "settling" for it. I appreciated XTR as it made it last longer.

Do you recommend changing the dims when going from poly to XTR?

I switched to a round tail on my newest Flyer and struck gold. It pulled just enough foam out of the tail to add some control and extend the comfortable wave size. So I'm finally ready to commit to the ultra-long wait and price tag.

Great board for average quality waves, I'm also on my 4th.

Are you front footed or back footed? I like the idea of the round tail, but not
sure if it will suit me. I am front footed.

Thanks

I went exactly at my PU dims on that last XTR Flyer. In future, I'd go 5'11" x 19" x 2-5/16". In other words, just scaled down a hair. Not much at all.

I prefer a squash on my small wave boards but the best looking Flyer I ever held was one that used to belong to T. Knox and it was a round tail and a little more foiled.

Very good small wave board up to around head high, if not hollow at least. I rode 6'2" x 19.5 x 2.5 at 6' and 190.

Sorry for the delay, I just returned from Winter Camp with the kids.

Usually front foot on the 1st bottom turn/pumps and then settle into back foot. Old school bottom turns and whatever I can manage off the top. That's probably front-footed.

I have a bad habit of occasionally jumping too far forward when I feel behind or late, but this board is so forgiving that when the forward rail catches it gives you an instant to correct. For me, that one element is what makes this board special. Most boards seem to work, but this one makes me more consistient.

Round tail for front-footer? I'm sure others could answer that better than me. I like the smoothness of the bottom turn(no surprises) and the extra hold when pushing the tail thru top turns, but you will sacrafice some glide.

Are you front-footed off the top as well? And if so, I'd be curious what types of boards work for you. I've always been confused about what exactly front-footed surfing is and isn't.

Cheers!

Had I talked to you four years ago, I could have avoided a lot of experimentation (i.e. DOLLARS).

I've watched ARC about a hundred times...oops, maybe I shouldn't have type that on this forum <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Ya, I am front footed, comes from years of snowboarding. The boards that have worked the best for me have been the MX, Mongrel, MTF and Single fin Gen 1, all merricks. The MX was unreal, but as I have gotten older and can't surf as much it just wasn't enough volume for me, I was working very hard for very little. Once I got up and going, that board was very fast and loose in my humble opinion. I am looking to get something new this spring to replace my Mongrel and am leaning towards the Flyer.

Isn't the M4 pretty similar to the MX, only fatter?

Maybe someone here has ridden both, I've only ridden the M4.
