Hi all,

Looking to take a longer term trip in a few years, been thinking of doing the remote work thing. Brazil keeps coming up on the list for several reasons: learning a new language (almost fluent in Spanish here), surf everyday in warm weather without, I guess, the pressure of always trying to score perfect waves. I'm getting older, I wanna splash around catch a few waves and stay fit. Maybe also take some drum lessons to learn samba/bossa nova etc. Seem plausible? It does to me, but then again I'm given to flights of fancy.

I looked into doing this and was pretty close to pulling the trigger. Then we got acquired and I wanted to recon the lay of the land.

I was looking to surfing in cooler weather. June here is pretty hot and unless we get a good early season the surf is usually pretty lackluster especially after Fall/Winter/Spring. June in Florianopolis looked kind of like early-mid November, and it was down season for the rentals so the price wasn't bad at all.

It's hard to recommend coming here when I would so quickly leave if I didn't have that many strings attached. lol.

Floripa sounds nice. If you don't mind staying awayish from big cities, the north coast of São Paulo is pretty cool and waves are good and consistent (expectations in check obviously, it's Brazil), not to mention we could hang every now and then. you would be from 2 to 3 hours away from São Paulo proper, you know, civilization, where people wear adult clothes and do actual work and stuff, to keep the country running and whatnot. Or go to Rio and become a jacked up beach bum.

If you can do it, do it.

Just advisable to know what you're getting into.

Are you married?

Floripa is beautiful as is Santa Catarina, know that Floripa is also a seasonal tourist island and from my travels there in the off season I would imagine it can get pretty lonely outside of Florianopolis in winter. Much more laid back than Hawaii and much slower pace. Good options for surf. Beachbreaks, points, sandbars, and a few reefs. But mostly beachbreak to keep you in good surfing shape. Water gets cool in the winter.

Haven't spent much time in SP and never been to Rio so I can't advise on those zones, but I'd just be prepared for the crowds and crime.

Brazilians are friendly people and pretty likable, your social life might improve.

I did a 6 month student exchange at the Santa Catarina University’s Engineering school. (I’m Portuguese)
I live in NYC and there are some really beautiful women here, but in my experience Floripa is where you find the most beautiful people in the world… its startling

The entire coast has decent waves. Maresias is further north, than you have a bunch of good beach breaks coming down south, Cambury, Praia da Baleia (mellow but good), Juquehy... a bunch more really...The main ones are crowded though, but you can absolutely find a place for yourself if you're not too picky and if you're willing to explore a bit. But the cities are pretty chill, I spend some time in the area every year to recharge.

I bussed it from Recife (far eastern tip) through most of the coast down to Floripa after graduating college over the course of 4 months. Was an epic time, found some good reefs and always something rideable somewhere. Bahia and Alagoas state are especially dreamy and the weather is perfect during our summer. Skipped Espirito Santo. Favorite coastline in the southern part was around Ubatuba. Floripa is gorgeous (as are the women) but it starts to feel more European and the food is boring.

The north facing coast of Brazil is weird and has a desert like climate. You'd think it would be tropical but it's kinda barren and Saudi Arabia hot. Basically got skunked during our winter on the coast west of Fortaleza where there were supposedly "point breaks". Even with what looked like a good swell forecast it sucked. Although Fernando de Noronha is an awesome place without the surf.

Would love to go back but only if I were divorced :roflmao: :drowning:

Probably dropping in on you, California
Did and month over there back in 2008 between Rio and Sao Paulo. People are nice, woman are gorgeous, nightlife is fucking epic, and the food is pretty good to.

Aint gonna lie - was nervous alot in Rio. Felt a target on my back the whole time and even the kids are scary.. Got used to it a couple weeks in, but i reckon I have no need to go back.

Have a Brazilian friend who works for Latam; she and her sister fly back and forth between Sao Paulo and Miami . They have a place in Sao Sebastiao (sp?) My friend-surfer- wants me to go for a few weeks, perhaps longer, and hit Fernando de Naronha, which she has never been to.

Seems like a reasonable thing to put together. Any thoughts?

And with regard to Casa's comments re: Brazilian women, it has been my experience that they are not only beautiful but also very lively. ;)

This trip could be pretty awesome! Take advantage of the exchange rate and go to Noronha man, it's getting out of hand expensive.

São Sebastião comprises most of the North Coast of São Paulo before the Ubatuba area (which is a bit further north). It would be nice to know where specifically you will be staying. Perhaps it's in São Sebastião proper, a little historic town, the place where you get the ferry to Ilha Bela which is a pretty cool place (and has waves if you decide to venture to the other side of the island... I never did... mosquitos there are evil bro). No waves in São Sebastião city and it's further North so it's a longer drive from São Paulo, but they're probably close to Juquehy or Maresias, it's where the cool trendy Miami home owning people hang.

Hit me up if you're ever down here!
