This 5'10" x 20 3/4" x 2 3/8" EPS Flying Floatey Fish quad shaped by Tom Neilson in Cocoa Beach was delivered the other day. It's the little brother to a 5'10.5" x 21" x 2 5/8" EPS Flying Floatey Fish that I've been riding for about a year now.

Version one is a niche board for me; in slopey high tide beach break from knee to shoulder high I have not ridden a better board. Gets up to speed quickly with a pump or two then just planes and maintains speed over the flat spots. The pulled in tail allows for quick changes of direction but you can also draw out turns and the board will just flow and won't lose speed. Even though the nose is wide, you can turn the board at speed and not worry about it catching. Version one is high volume though, thick with full rails, and when the waves get steeper it tends to hang up on take offs and had a bit of that corky feel.

I ordered the new board a little shorter, a little narrower, and a quarter inch thinner and told Tom I wanted the board for a wider range of conditions. I've had a couple sessions on the board and it does exactly what I wanted it to do. Has the familiar speed generation, planing and turning ability as the first one; the ride is totally consistent. I can't wait to ride it in steeper lined up conditions.

There is a definite sweet spot (both front and back feet) and consistent foot placement is key.

I think it would be fun to experiment with this shape in different lengths and different fin configurations; seems like a board that could easily be customized for different ride preferences and conditions.

Tom is really easy to deal with and ships to CA; both boards were finished in about a month and delivered about 10 days after that, well-packed.

Anyway, these boards work great for me, I really think Tom has the magic formula for this shape.

Something about that outline just looks really right. I like the pulled tail. Looks like a really fun ride!

Can't say enough good things about the Flying Floaty Fish, mine is EPS/Epoxy as well and had it for a year now. It's still bright white, and other than some slight denting on the deck still looks new.

Sometimes I have to leave the board at home so I'll ride some of my other boards. If I take it to the beach regardless of conditions, I'll pull it out 1st and wont ride my other boards.

I saw SGVL ripping his epoxy version in complete crap this summer. Matter of fact he was ripping so hard some randon hottie on the beach approached his wife and asked if he just surfed for fun or was he sponsored!!

Board looked like it was working very well in waves I would generally not paddle out in.

Sweet...you will be stoked!

Forgot to add that whoever glasses these boards does a first rate job...I'm really happy with the quality of these boards.

It's so awsome that a local shaper that has been shaping my boards for so long is getting recognition on the left coast. He really does have these boards dialed has to be his top selling model, and I think LP(larry pope) glass glasses his boards I know they do BATS

Just picked up mine! Specs: 6'4" 22" 2 5/8" EPS epoxy, Single to double concave. Double bump swallow with the 5 fin option. I've always ridden thrusters but i'm going to run it as a quad first since I hear they feel better that way. Tom really has this shape dialed and the quality and glass job is top notch. Great guy to deal with and excellent prices. Will post a review when I get a few sessions on it.

these boards work well in mush and good waves alike. here's me in mush and the same board in some steeper little waves piloted by it's owner Lawless.

this board is a quad, 5'10 x 20 something by 2 1/4" and it's about 3+ years old and working like a charm everytime

I keep coming back to this pic, it pretty much defines how this board can surf in well, almost nothing; amazed at the planing, speed of the turn on such a flat wave...a right go left with the spray off the turn on the tail, rail buried, hand dragging for pivot
Neilson should keep this one and point to it when anybody asks about this board's ability to surf small waves
that wave is something I would only consider logging at first sight, but this shot (board) puts it in a whole different perspective
anyway, enough of my hype. good stuff.

Got some inquiries about sizing the board...I'm 6'2", 175 lbs.

The 2nd board (5'10" x 20 3/4" x 2 3/8", EPS) has volume to spare and pretty much out paddles all the other boards in my quiver except my first FFF.

My first FFF (5'10.5" x 20 1" x 2 5/8", EPS) would work for someone at least 20-25 pounds heavier than I am.

Again, I think you could scale this shape up or down depending on what you were looking for (longboard substitute, big guy shortboard replacement, alternative fish).

The twin plus trailer is a great idea...I'm kind of wishing I had a convertible fin set up now to experiment!
