Best strength training routine? Thoughts?

The bench press isolates the chest and shoulders.

It's not a rotator cuff strengthening exercise.

I've seen this firsthand - elite level swimmers pretty common knowledge to stay the fook away from the bench press.
I think they are over doing it.

Bench will make you strong all over.

At your age you could just do a couple of sets twice a week and it won't hurt.

I think over head pressing is more functional for a surfer.

But same thing, you don't over do and don't train like a body builder.

Swimming creates a bunch of imbalances in body.

I would guess at this point you're probably not doing much swimming, surfing, or water poloing.

That's not an attack, I'm just saying I probably get a lot more water time than you.
Probably, but I still surf 2-3x per week and bench twice a week.

My sources are very reliable with this - trained Olympic swimmers.

I would think they're pretty dialed in.
Probably not. This is the back cover of Dave Salo's book. I'm only seeing weaklings. Best thing to do is just not lift weights if you're worried about it. I don't have a strong opinion on whether you bench, but the bench and OHP assist each-other. I also don't know how you can have such a strong opinion without having a 1000 lb total.

It probably trains your zygomaticus too.

The main area it's meant to train is the chest, however.

I had forgotten about the burn in the triceps!
You should take your dumb book back to the library and just think of the bench press as the squat for the upper body. Damn near every muscle in your body will be used when properly executing the bench press. Or better yet...if you don;;t like the answers stop asking questions.

The heavy weight is going to simulate growth all over

When did you max out last?

Do you still have your outdoor setup?

After my back injury and surgery, I can make my leg go numb by staring at a computer screen hard.

I have to be super careful when I lift.

(I loved to lift all crazy. I did it for 25 years)

I still have my back yard set up and I joined a gym too.
