By 'weighing,' the NYT means the Regime is trying to figure out just how unpopular this is before doing it. They like to manufacture consent and run in front of the locomotive, but in this case they've failed to manufacture consent.
Dissolving NATO doesn't seem that bad now, does it?

Send the warmongers
Right. there's no reason France and Germany can't defend their own borders. If they aren't producing enough young men to man and army, then that's their problem, not us. NATO was set up to keep the US in, Germany down, and the USSR out, but modern Russia is not the USSR at all.

Mutti Merkel got rid of mandatory military service in Germany, showing they care even less about their borders than they did before.

Even if they're not producing enough young men they're overrun with "refugees" that would love to prove how much their new countries mean to them.... right?

Sure. Most 'refugees' are military-age young men. Get them weapons and transport to the 'front.'

The US doesn't have mandatory military service - do we not care about our borders?

The entire point of NATO was to protect the US's economic interests in Western Europe AND to keep weapons of mass destruction out of Germany's hands. We still have plenty of economic interest in Western Europe. Are we now ok with Germany developing nukes and revamping their military might? Because as much as you'd like to think the US can stay out of European wars, that just ain't the case in this day and age.

I could see this very easily not going well. EU sends troops into Ukraine through Romania, a NATO member. Russia retaliates against Romania or other NATO members in the Baltics and viola!, another big-ass European war and we'll be in on it. Meanwhile China thinks, "maybe this would be a good time to move on Taiwan."

Thinking outside of the box, we could also preemptively nuke the sh!t out of the Ukraine, leaving nothing for Russia, completely taking the war winds out of their sails.

Who knows, maybe it will bring some life back to the Black Sea.

This will be the first global conflict started primarily over water. After Russia's seizure of Crimea in 2014, the Ukrainians subsequently shut down the North Crimea Canal, starving the region of water. The situation was exasperated by last year's drought. Russia needs to get the taps turned back on and the only way to do so is the threat of or actual armed conflict.
This will not end well.

Mutually Assured Desalination to ensue.

But yeah, totally agreed about water becoming a precious resource, especially as more and more aquifers are being contaminated/depleted. Even more so in the case of 3rd World countries that aren't all that conscious of implications of dumping wherever they will.

I will help do my part by only drinking beers over 7% ABV. We do this together, we can save water.

Yep. Water stress is no joke and will result in conflict. At some point India is going to have to have a talk with China regarding their damming of rivers in the Himalayas. Going to get ugly.
chinese and arab countries buying up water rights to grow cattle feed here and ship it home

Colorado river is under immense pressure...the west is drying out

I'm doing my part this week- the Southern California Rain Dance. Also known as washing your car.
