According to the sometimes reliable NYTimes 5/23 page B2 the fee will be replaced by their standard $30 baggage fee
if not over 50 lbs.

You know your policy sucks when Spirit Airlines has a better boardbag fee policy. If you know anything about Spirit you know what I mean.

Spirit counts stix. Stuff them.

I'm flying Copa on Tuesday to CA just I did in 2017 :jam_on:....I ASSUME the bag policy is the same when I booked the flight :loser:...just checked baggage policy and it's $150 each way 2 board max!!! :banghead: :banghead: WTF!!! Hoping to stuff and hide 4 boards and be under the 70lbs limit...question to Copa?? would they rather have 2 boards at 68 LBS or 4 boards at 55LBS??? Fcuking hope they don't check the bag!! :cussing:

Copa is easy to get it waived. Calmly tell the agent your boards were damaged in a previous flight with them (even if there wasn’t one) and tell them it will/did cost you a few hundred. Ask for the fee to be waived, they usually do it.

THanks for the advice manbearpig and I did exactly everything you said and said even more bullshit out of my mouth but the airline lady (who was a 5/7 would bag and I was a mumbling fool) wasn’t having any of it....she went through my bag and found my 3rd board (which I probably won’t use) and told me to take it out it’s not going on the flight! I then had to beg and plead with the supervisor and after 10minutes of back-n-forth she let me take the bag on for $150 each way and then she earmarked my account for the return leg flight to show that if my 3rd board (hope to sell or break) is in the bag then it doesn’t go on the flight at all!!!

Anyone else ever had this bad of an experience? Never flying Copa again!!!

Wow that’s pretty bad. It probably helps that whenever I flew copa I only had one board.

What do airlines expect you to do with the board they want you to take out?

I thought they charged $100 per bag, which can contain more than one board. My go to airline-jetblue-has now raised their rates from $50 per board to $100.

American looks pretty good.

Returning flights on United to California are the same great deal, they cost the same as a normal checked bag ($30 I believe). Two things to note with United, surfboard bags over 50lbs get excess baggage charges (their site makes it seem that you can go up to 99lbs without additional fees, but over 50lbs you get charged a ton). And be sure to check "excess baggage embargoes" if flying internationally. Some of their routes don't let you take boards certain times of year.
