Board: 5'9" x ~21" x ~2.4" Shawn Ambrose stringerless, bat-tailed EPS Sputnik quad.

Rider: 6'1" x 175 lbs., 40 year old landlocked 9-5'er.

I've had this board about 2 months and have ridden it primarily in small waves (ankle high to head high plus) in LA, Orange, and San Diego county. I recently took it on a trip to Central America.

I'm still learning how to ride this thing, but I can say that it is the fastest small-wave board I've ever had. Paddles great, catches waves easily and planes through the flat spots remarkably well. The waves on my Central America trip were small and mediocre, with predominately onshore winds, and this board absolutely made the trip. I could go out in sloppy, onshore, head high beachbreak for hours and still have a lot of fun. With my normal shortboard I might not have even paddled out, but this board opens up a ton of possibilities in marginal conditions. It's skatey and fun and feels like cheating because I know I would be struggling if I were on my usual shortboard.

The Sputnik generates a lot of interest; it's unusual and unique, especially with Shawn's "Flex-Drive", and on my recent trip it was the board that everyone wanted to pick up and take a look at. I've gotten comments and compliments from random people in the water too, which is nice for an aging kook like me.

The board is set up with Lok-Box and I'm using glass fins in Shawn's template (with the small rear fins). They're positioned right on the shaper's mark and I wouldn't change anything about this set-up.

Anyways here are a few pics from the trip; this was a session at a soft wave with a cobblestone bottom, the conditions were relatively clean that morning (it was the only time the guide took shots the whole week):

That thing looks like pure skateboard with loose trucks! Speed, flow and user friendly. Something we all look for in a post modern fish. Stoked for ya

You got it...playgrounds! Although technically we got skunked, it was still a good trip. I surfed 2-3 times each day and I'm surfed out. It would have been nice to get some emerald green offshore tubes though!

yeah we had a fun session there. Kinda reminded me of trestles. I tell my friends that trip was like surf bootcamp. Up at 530am surf 2-3hrs before breakfast. We surfed 3-4 spots every day,some beers at the end of the day and dead asleep by 9pm. Can't wait to go back

Great review & pictures! Such a sick looking shape.I have to admit that being close to your height and age, I have a hard time imagining myself riding a 5'9 modern fish. If you don't mind me asking, what dims do you ride in your other boards? Does the Sputnik pack foam more like a retro fish?

Here are my dims. on other boards that get used regularly:

6'4" x 19 3/4" x 2 3/8" Fletcher Chouinard EPS (XTR?) thruster step-up (used to be my normal shortboard);

6'2" x 19 3/4" x 2 9/16" Griffin PU twin fin shortboard (next Griffin order will be shorter, thinner, and EPS);

6'0" x 20 3/4" x 2 3/4" Gary Hanel PU quad fish.

When I picked up the Sputnik it felt like a toy; I did not think it was going to float me.

It doesn't pack foam like the Hanel quad, but what it does have is width, flatness, and it's EPS. The tail is super wide, and the width carries through the rest of the outline.

If I had to order a new one, I honestly don't know whether I would order it any longer. That being said, I definitely wouldn't go shorter.

Hey SGVL what dimensions are you thinking of going with on your next one? I'm about to order a griffin twin myself. I'm 5'9 180-185 and was thinking 6'1 19 3/4 x 2 7/16

I was thinking somewhere in the range of 6'0" to 6'1", 19 1/2" to 19 3/4", 2 3/8" to 2 7/16".

I'm riding my twin with the rear foot pretty far back, right over the fins, and that seems to leave some volume ahead of my front foot sometimes.

I'm thinking if I went shorter it would be a better fit with my natural stance; also, if my front foot was centered over the forward width/volume I'd have a little more leverage to sink the rail on bottom turns, etc. This would all be just fine tuning though!

So I guess I would say, based on my experience, to figure out the right length for your stance then let the remaining dims flow from that. At 5'9" I think you could go shorter than 6'1"...but talk to Greg and see what he says, I am still a Griffin newbie.
